"I demand complete silence!" He threw me into the field, where I landed with a dull thud, and Alpha Romeo growled out at once, which caused everyone to go very silent. Indignantly, he proclaimed, "Today, I shall teach this filthy, accursed Omega a lesson." Omega was the antagonist in this story. "You shall feel regret." It was my own father who was the first one to move when he suddenly snapped his fingers. Some of the other members of the pack followed suit. They were holding him in their arms, and he did not put up any resistance to it. They brought him before the Alpha, where he flashed a grin in his direction. My grandfather did not make much movement; he was simply staring at him in shock the entire time. The way Romeo was staring at me and then at him helped me figure out what he was planning to do. "NO!" I said as loud as I could, "I am the one who dared to defy you! Please don't involve my dad in this!" This was met with derision from the Alpha, who then contacted my father. When he raised my father off the ground, he gradually turned his hands into claws. Then, in a single savage stroke, Alpha Romeo thrust his clawed hand into my father's chest, piercing and impaling him. I was able to see his heart, which had been ripped open and destroyed by the clawed paw of the Alpha, which had punched a hole through him. My name is Sabrina White, and this miserable existence is brought to you by me.

Even from upside-down in his recently flipped truck, Frank Soos reveals himself to be ruminative, grappling with the limitations of language to express the human condition. Moving quickly—skiing in the dark or taking long summer bike rides on Alaska highways—Soos combines an active physical life with a dark and difficult interior existence, wrestling the full span of “thinking and doing” onto the page with surprising lightness. His meditations move from fly-fishing in dangerously swift Alaska rivers to memories of the liars and dirty-joke tellers of his small-town Virginia childhood, revealing insights in new encounters and old preoccupations. Soos writes about pain and despair, aging, his divorce, his father’s passing, regret, the loss of home, and the fear of death. But in the process of confronting these dark topics, he is full of wonder. As he writes at the end of an account of almost drowning, “Bruised but whole, I was alive, alive, alive.”

It was the 1950s in postwar America, and paperback books were the hot new product in the publishing industry. Of course, to stand out from the crowd and sell, one needed a gimmick. Into this newly exuberant market came a publishing house named Ace Books, with the seductive promise of two books for the price of one. It also had the eye-catching premise of two separate covers, joined at the spine like Siamese twins. Finished with one book? Flip the paperback over and begin again with a new novel, complete with its own package. It was something completely different -- and it sold! "Double Trouble" tours the short yet popular era of the Ace Mystery Doubles, and includes both author-title and title indexes for easy reference.
