The cost of copyrights has been very great. He wishes to return thanks to those composers who have kindly allowed him to use their pieces gratis; and to a large number of European composers whose addresses it has been impossible to secure. He is under lasting obligation to the accomplished musician Prof. N. Bowditch Clapp, for his revision of the musical part of the work; and, for their help in the selection of hymns and tunes, to Rev. M. D. Hoge, D. D., Rev. W. A. Campbell, D. D., Rev. T. D. Witherspoon, D. D., Rev. W. S. Lacy D. D., and Rev. J. P. Smith D. D. These distinguished divines have afforded invaluable assistance by giving the' benefit of their experience and taste in the preparation of the work. A large chorus choir, trained to sing rapidly, and with spirit, is the best inspiration for congregational singing. After the introduction of a new book, there should also be meetings held on some evening during the week for congregational practice that the people may learn new tunes.
