This volume is a part of the comprehensive study about social problems that India is facing at present. The whole study is divided into five volumes. This Volume Two deals with various fields of social work in India and is the Fifth revised edition of the earlier volume published in 1967. The fields covered have been discussed under five heads. Part One deals with concept and scope of social work as well as history of social work in U.K., U.S.A. and India. Part Two examines the social welfare services being provided for children, women, youth, labour and backward classes; urban and rural welfare; family welfare and housing. Part Three deals with social security measures and services for the handicapped. Part Four is concerned with social administration and legislation. Part Five deals with international welfare agencies and examines critically the state of welfare services being provided in India. Part Six deals with developments which have taken place in this field since 1973 when the second edition was brought out.

Religion-based educational disparities, especially relative educational backwardness amongst the Muslims in India, are the focus of serious debate. The 2006 Sachar Committee Report rekindled public interest and attention in this important issue. Yet, considerable gaps exist in our understanding of the dynamics of religion and access to education. In Religion, Community, and Education, Alam uses a spatial approach and multilayered analytical framework to understand educational disparities in schooling between the Hindus and Muslims in Bihar. The study draws upon national-level data as well as focused fieldwork carried out in Bihar's Patna and Purnia districts. This book highlights the larger historical trajectories that have shaped educational development as well as the forms of disparities therein vis-Ă -vis the minorities in India. It contends that the relative educational backwardness of the Muslims reflects underlying socio-economic patterns that are often overlooked. Thus, the Muslims should not be seen merely as homogeneous socio-cultural aggregates.
