The volume "Modern Information Processing: From Theory to Applications," edited by Bernadette Bouchon-Meunier, Giulianella Coletti and Ronald Yager, is a collection of carefully selected papers drawn from the program of IPMU'04, which was held in Perugia, Italy. The book represents the cultural policy of IPMU conference which is not focused on narrow range of methodologies, but on the contrary welcomes all the theories for the management of uncertainty and aggregation of information in intelligent systems, providing a medium for the exchange of ideas between theoreticians and practitioners in these and related areas. The book is composed by 7 sections: UNCERTAINTYPREFERENCESCLASSIFICATION AND DATA MININGAGGREGATION AND MULTI-CRITERIA DECISION MAKINGKNOWLEDGE REPRESENTATION•The book contributes to enhancement of our ability to deal effectively with uncertainty in all of its manifestations. •The book can help to build brigs among theories and methods methods for the management of uncertainty. •The book addresses issues which have a position of centrality in our information-centric world. •The book presents interesting results devoted to representing knowledge: the goal is to capture the subtlety of human knowledge (richness) and to allow computer manipulation (formalization). •The book contributes to the goal: an efficient use of the information for a good decision strategy.APPLIED DOMAINS· The book contributes to enhancement of our ability to deal effectively with uncertainty in all of its manifestations.· The book can help to build brigs among theories and methods methods for the management of uncertainty.· The book addresses issues which have a position of centrality in our information-centric world.· The book presents interesting results devoted to representing knowledge: the goal is to capture the subtlety of human knowledge (richness) and to allow computer manipulation (formalization).· The book contributes to the goal: an efficient use of the information for a good decision strategy.

What is digital business reporting? Why do we need it? And how can we improve it? This book aims to address these questions by illustrating the rise of system-to-system information exchange and the opportunities for improving transparency and accountability. Governments around the world are looking for ways to strengthen transparency and accountability without introducing more red tape, which is a source of growing frustration and costs for businesses. In 2004, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Justice in the Netherlands started to investigate the potential of XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) as a uniform data standard for business-to-government information exchange. In 2006, there was a comprehensive architecture for Standard Business Reporting (SBR), including the requirements for the information infrastructure. One year later the first reports in XBRL were successfully delivered to the Tax and Customs Administration and the Chamber of Commerce via a secure infrastructure. Today, millions of business reports are being exchanged using SBR. As a solution, SBR empowers organisations to present a cohesive explanation of their business operations and helps them engage with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators, shareholders and creditors. Challenging the chain describes the journey of SBR from challenge to solution. Specialists in the field – flanked by academics – provide detailed insights on the challenges actors faced and the solutions they achieved. In its versatility, this book exemplifies the necessary paradigm shifts when it comes to such large-scale public-private transformations. Policy makers, managers, IT specialists and architects looking to engage in such transformations will find guidance in this book.

This is a practical introduction to the key computing concepts of networks and communications, suitable for a first year undergraduate or industrial course. It provides the foundational knowledge on which to build a fully developed understanding of modern communications methodologies, techniques and standards. It will also be a useful professional reference companion.; The book begins with a general introduction to data communications and the options commonly open to the system designer. It then provides overviews of the key areas in which design decisions must be made: communication media; interface standards; network architectures; modems and multiplexers; network topologies, switching and access control; local area networks; wide-area networks; performance; software issues; security; and implementation.; As a second edition of an established text the book has been thoroughly revised and improved but retains the strengths of the first edition in its clear and well- illustrated exposition. It includes current developments in standards and architecture including ATM, B-ISDN, SNMP, TCP/IP, and other state-of-the- art features of the computer communications world.; In its first edition the book was an authoritative textbook and personal reference for industry. In this new edition it should be even more essential for all with a need for an accessible modern technical introduction to computer communications and networks. Suitable for a practically orientated computer science course at degree level or for an introductory industrial course.
