This book introduces the author's own experience in the application of surgical strategies for treating otologic diseases that follow this priority.Main TopicsConcepts of restitutional ear surgery; Instrumentation; Anesthesia and monitoring; Otosurgical anatomy: A manual for the temporal bone dissection training; Injuries of the ear and the temporal bone; Malformations of the ear; Otosclerosis; External otitis; Acute otitis media and mastoiditis; Chronic otitis media and its complications; Petrositis and osteomyelitis of the temporal bone; Tumors of the external ear; Tumors of the middle ear and the temporal bone; Otologic nerve surgery; Cochlear and brainstem implants

The Biology of Change in Otolaryngology

Book Description

The papers in this symposium approach biological change from many points of view. These include paleontology, molecular biology, neurophysiology, embryology, psychoacoustics, developmental psychology, biochemistry and experimental surgery to name only a few of the represented intellectual disciplines. This diversity of approaches allows for an abstraction of the general concepts which are implicit in these studies. One of these concepts is that a system may or may not have the ability to repair or regenerate itself, it is well known that many types of receptor cells and neurons of the central nervous system cannot repair or regenerate themselves, this quality is considered as the dogma of the endstate cell. The dogma of the endstate cell is questioned by a number of papers presented at this symposium which study similar cell types in different forms of life. A second concept is that a system's ability to change is dependent upon its state. Some systems are always ready to change whereas others are available for change only when a particular set of conditions are present

Anatomy and Physiology of Hearing for Audiologists

Book Description

The first anatomy and physiology text just for audiologists, this new text brings together some of the best professional minds in the field to consider the structures and mechanisms of the auditory system. Basic science is covered in the foundations section of the text, giving a much needed examination of the biological processes in terms the audiologist needs most. Detailed examination of the anatomy and physiology of hearing follows with diagrams and in-depth discussions. The text concludes with chapters on the pathology of hearing, covering the different causes of hearing loss, from noise-induced hearing loss to genetic aspects of hearing loss. From start to finish this text is written specifically for the audiologist, making it an essential foundational resource.

Peterson's Guide to Graduate Programs in the Biological Sciences 1997

Book Description

Graduate students depend on this series and ask for it by name. Why? For over 30 years, it's been the only one-stop source that supplies all of their information needs. The new editions of this six-volume set contain the most comprehensive information available on more than 1,500 colleges offering over 31,000 master's, doctoral, and professional-degree programs in more than 350 disciplines. New for 1997 -- Non-degree-granting research centers, institutes, and training programs that are part of a graduate degree program. Five discipline-specific volumes detail entrance and program requirements, deadlines, costs, contacts, and special options, such as distance learning, for each program, if available. Each Guide features "The Graduate Adviser", which discusses entrance exams, financial aid, accreditation, and more. The only source that covers nearly 4,000 programs in such areas as oncology, conservation biology, pharmacology, and zoology.
