With the advent of the Web along with the unprecedented amount of information available in electronic format, conceptual data analysis is more useful and practical than ever, because this technology addresses important limitations of the systems that currently support users in their quest for information. Concept Data Analysis: Theory & Applications is the first book that provides a comprehensive treatment of the full range of algorithms available for conceptual data analysis, spanning creation, maintenance, display and manipulation of concept lattices. The accompanying website allows you to gain a greater understanding of the principles covered in the book through actively working on the topics discussed. The three main areas explored are interactive mining of documents or collections of documents (including Web documents), automatic text ranking, and rule mining from structured data. The potentials of conceptual data analysis in the application areas being considered are further illustrated by two detailed case studies. Concept Data Analysis: Theory & Applications is essential for researchers active in information processing and management and industry practitioners who are interested in creating a commercial product for conceptual data analysis or developing content management applications.

We hope that all readers will find the papers included in this volume of interest. All were presented at the 14th BCS IRSG Research Colloquium held at Lancaster University on 13th-14th April 1992. The papers display very well the scope and breadth of information retrieval, as indeed did the workshop ilself. They also present a good cross-section of current IR research, and as such provide a useful signpost for trends in information retrieval. Before we finish we must thank the following colleagues: Simon Botley, Paul Rayson and Paul Jones for their help in the organization of the conference. We would also like to extend a special message of thanks to Professor G.N. Leech of the Department of Linguistics at Lancaster and Roger Garside of the Department of Computing at Lancaster for their support during the conference period. Tony McEnery would also like to express his thanks and gratitude to Paul Baker for his help during the production of this book. Published in 1992, like the first, this second edition is not intended as introductory textbook command-driven, Boolean searching. It is targeted at online searchers who already have some knowledge of command languages and may be proficient searchers on databases in one or two subject areas, but when required to venture into new and less familiar territory still need guidance. It is also offered to end users who possess the subject expertise but lack of information retrieval know-how. The Manual is offered as a guide to database selection and a navigational aid through the twists and turns of the retrieval maze; at least some of the dead ends and backtracking may thereby be avoided. This volume, written by experts in their various fields, deals with the subject coverage and record structures of specific databases, offers comparisons between databases (context, indexing procedures, updating policies, etc.), discusses the choice between online and CD-ROM sources (and between hosts if online is selected), and illustrates strategies with numerous search extracts.
