This report summarizes Advanced System Technologies' accomplishments on the Phase 2 SBIR contract NAS7-995. The technical objectives of the report are: (1) to develop an evaluation version of a graphical, integrated modeling language according to the specification resulting from the Phase 2 research; and (2) to determine the degree to which the language meets its objectives by evaluating ease of use, utility of two sets of performance predictions, and the power of the language constructs. The technical approach followed to meet these objectives was to design, develop, and test an evaluation prototype of a graphical, performance prediction tool. The utility of the prototype was then evaluated by applying it to a variety of test cases found in the literature and in AST case histories. Numerous models were constructed and successfully tested. The major conclusion of this Phase 2 SBIR research and development effort is that complex, real-time computer systems can be specified in a non-procedural manner using combinations of icons, windows, menus, and dialogs. Such a specification technique provides an interface that system designers and architects find natural and easy to use. In addition, PEDESTAL's multiview approach provides system engineers with the capability to perform the trade-offs necessary to produce a design that meets timing performance requirements. Sample system designs analyzed during the development effort showed that models could be constructed in a fraction of the time required by non-visual system design capture tools. Human Performance Models for Computer-Aided Engineering is a collection of papers that deals with the relationship between scientific theories of human performance and practical engineering. This collection describes the emergence of a scientific engineering paradigm that uses computational theories in computational design aids. This book also considers computational human factors such as human performance models and their application in computer-based engineering designs. This text then presents applications of these models to some helicopter flight problems. This book also explains the four requirements in programming a computer-based model of the sensory performance of a pilot as 1) prediction capability; 2) measurement capability; 3) provision of compatible computer algorithms; and 4) image driven. This collection also describes cognitive structures—aspects of the human information processing system. This text then discusses resource management and time-sharing issues that is related to competition of scarce resources, which can be predictive of the quality of information processing. This book also describes other modeling scenarios such as those predicting human errors, decision making, and shape modeling. This text can prove valuable for computer programmers, engineers, physicists, and research scientists dealing with psychophysics.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Symposium on High Performance Computing, ISHPC 2002, held in Kansai Science City, Japan, in May 2002 together with the two workshops WOMPEI 2002 and HPF/HiWEP 2002. The 51 revised papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the proceedings. The book is organized in topical sections on networks, architectures, HPC systems, Earth Simulator, OpenMP-WOMPEI 2002, and HPF-HiWEP 2002.

I wish to welcome all of you to the International Symposium on High Perf- mance Computing 2002 (ISHPC2002) and to Kansai Science City, which is not farfromtheancientcapitalsofJapan:NaraandKyoto.ISHPC2002isthefourth in the ISHPC series, which consists, to date, of ISHPC ’97 (Fukuoka, November 1997), ISHPC ’99 (Kyoto, May 1999), and ISHPC2000 (Tokyo, October 2000). The success of these symposia indicates the importance of this area and the strong interest of the research community. With all of the recent drastic changes in HPC technology trends, HPC has had and will continue to have a signi?cant impact on computer science and technology. I am pleased to serve as General Chair at a time when HPC plays a crucial role in the era of the IT (Information Technology) revolution. The objective of this symposium is to exchange the latest research results in software, architecture, and applications in HPC in a more informal and friendly atmosphere. I am delighted that the symposium is, like past successful ISHPCs, comprised of excellent invited talks, panels, workshops, as well as high-quality technical papers on various aspects of HPC. We hope that the symposium will provide an excellent opportunity for lively exchange and discussion about - rections in HPC technologies and all the participants will enjoy not only the symposium but also their stay in Kansai Science City.
