Introduction to Speculative Logic (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Introduction to Speculative Logic This book was written some fifteen years ago during my stay in England. Events having called me back to my na tive country, and, being engaged in other publications and my professional duties, I did not meet with, nor seek for, an Opportunity of publishing it. Now this opportunity has been kindly afforded me by my honored and valued friend Mr. 'wm. T. Harris, to whom Hegelianism is greatly indebted for having boldly set up its banner, and, by his and his fel low-workers' labors and perseverance, opened to it a new and wide field on the young and vigorous American soil. An Introductory Logic (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from An Introductory Logic The present\edition represents a somewhat thorough revision of this book, which had remained substantially unchanged since its first publication, eleven years ago. Changes of more or less importance have been introduced into every chapter; new paragraphs have been added to many of the sections; and, especially in the Second Part, many of the sections have been entirely rewritten. Chap ter XIII. Of the old text, on the Problem of Induction, has been expanded into two chapters; and, throughout this Part, an attempt has been made to bring the treatment of the various inductive methods into closer relation with a general philosophical theory. The chapter with which the text formerly closed, Rational and Empirical Theories, has been replaced by one entitled The Unification of Knowledge. It has seemed important to conclude the discussion of the nature of thought with some statement of the meaning and function of the main categories which experience involves, and, in this connection, to Indicate in a general way the necessity of a philosophical interpreta tion of the results of the special sciences. The number of problems and examples of reasoning to be analyzed has been more than doubled in the belief that fresh material of this nature will prove welcome to teachers of the subject. An Introduction to General Logic (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from An Introduction to General Logic The only method of explaining, questioning, justifying, or disproving any Proposition is by means of other Proposi tions having some relation to it. Logic may be called the Science of the Import and Relations of Propositions; and since all Sciences are expressed in Propositions, Logic is thus the Science of Sciences - that is, the Science of a method of procedure which applies in every department of knowledge. General Logic starts from the standpoint of ordinary thought, and assumes Reason in Man and Trustworthiness in Language.
