Battle Of Ituzaingó, 1827

Book Description

The biggest pitched battle in Brazilian territory took place on February 20, 1827, about 13 km east of the current city of Rosário do Sul. Alvear (commander of the platine republican army) disguised his movements in order to make Barbacena (commander of the Brazilian imperial army) believe that he was chasing the rear of a retreating army, when in fact all his troops were close by. The battle lasted eleven hours and its end did not mean the end of the Cisplatine War. According to Brazilian historians, Passo do Rosário was an accumulated series of tremendous imperial errors, responsible for not having had a stupendous victory there .

Historical Biogeography of Neotropical Freshwater Fishes

Book Description

The fish faunas of continental South and Central America constitute one of the greatest concentrations of aquatic diversity on Earth, consisting of about 10 percent of all living vertebrate species. Historical Biogeography of Neotropical Freshwater Fishes explores the evolutionary origins of this unique ecosystem. The chapters address central themes in the study of tropical biodiversity: why is the Amazon basin home to so many distinct evolutionary lineages? What roles do ecological specialization, speciation, and extinction play in the formation of regional assemblages? How do dispersal barriers contribute to isolation and diversification? Focusing on whole faunas rather than individual taxonomic groups, this volume shows that the area’s high regional diversity is not the result of recent diversification in lowland tropical rainforests. Rather, it is the product of species accumulating over tens of millions of years and across a continental arena.

Global Entangled Inequalities

Book Description

This book presents studies from across Latin America to take up the challenge of exploring the plurality of social inequalities from a global perspective. Accordingly, it identifies the structural forces of social inequalities on a world scale as they shape asymmetries observed in a wide array of phenomena, such as racial and gender inequality, urbanization, migration, commodity production, indigenous mobilization, ecological conflicts, and the "new middle class". A rich contribution to the study of the interconnections between the global social structure and multiple local and national hierarchies, Global Entangled Inequalities brings consistently together a variety of conceptual approaches, ranging from ethnographies to legal genealogies, and will therefore appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in social theory, power analysis, intersectionality studies, urban studies, and global social and environmental justice.
