Jesus and the Addict

Book Description

Jesus and the Addict: Twelve Bible Studies for People Getting Free from Drugs is for leaders in Christian faith-based recovery to guide their communities toward freedom from drugs and it is for those in recovery and for their families. The book contains studies on issues people in recovery face such as overcoming fear, overcoming resentment, having hope, remaining permanently sober, and dealing with forgiveness. New life and a renewed mind through Jesus Christ is the answer in all these things. The book is especially intended for pastors, church leaders, mentors, sponsors, teachers, families and friends of addicts - for anyone working in jail, prison, transitional communities, churches, or helping family members. It will help those hoping to begin recovery outreach in their churches. It is also a source of healing and insight for people in recovery themselves and for those who love and support them.

Jesus and Addiction to Origins

Book Description

This collection of essays constitute an extended argument for an anthropocentric, human-focused, study of religious practices. The basic premise of the argument, offered in the opening section, is that there is nothing special or extraordinary about human behaviors and constructs that are claimed to have uniquely religious status and authority. Instead, they are fundamentally human and so the scholar of religion is engaged in nothing more or less than studying humans across time and place and all their complex existence-that includes creating more-than-human beings and realities. As an extended and detailed example of such an approach, the second part of the book contains essays that address practices, rhetoric and other data in early Christianities within Greco-Roman cultures and religions. The underlying aim is to insert studies of the New Testament and non-canonical texts, most often presented as "biblical studies," into the anthropocentric study of religion proposed in the opening section. For a general reading of modern biblical scholarship makes clear the assumption that the Christian bible is a "sacred text" whose principal raison d'etre is to stand, fetish-like, as the foundational and highest authority in matters moral, ritual or theological; how might we instead approach the study of these texts if they are nothing more or less than human documents deriving from situations that were themselves all too human? Braun's Jesus and Addiction to Origins seeks to answer just that question-doing so in a way that readers working outside Christian origins will undoubtedly find useful applications for the people, places, and historical periods that they study.

Freedom from Addiction

Book Description

Many Christians are locked in a cycle of addiction, particularly in the areas of alcohol and drug abuse. Many have turned to 12-Step programs for help. But, where is the incredible power of Christ in this process? In a positive, non-condemning way, Anderson provides an alternative model of recovery for substance and alcohol abusers, a model that will also work for individuals struggling with other kinds of addictions. The first half of Freedom from Addictions tells the unbelievable story of Mike and Julia Quarles, and how Mike overcame a debilitating addiction to alcohol. He achieved success by applying the principles that make up the central theme of Dr. Anderson's message: that we are saints according to God's word (Eph 1) and that true freedom comes from realizing o ur identity in Christ.

Jesus and Addiction

Book Description

Drawing on his deep and personal knowledge of codependency, addiction, and recovery, the author of Signs, Wonders, and The Kingdom of God argues convincingly that we must look at dysfunctional behavior within our culture, our churches, and ourselves. By daring to journey through the pain of spiritual emptiness, which is the root of addiction, we can transform the church from the inside out.

12 Steps with Jesus

Book Description

Don Williams powerfully relates in 12 Steps with Jesus that by allowing Jesus to fill the emptiness that leads to addictive behavior, readers can leave addiction in the dust! Churches must lead people to dependence on Jesus. When we give ourselves wholly to Christ, He will fill us wholly, replacing the hollowness that results in addictions. In twelve practical steps, Williams reveals how to achieve spiritual fulfillment in Christ, discover freedom from addiction, and embrace the abundant life that God promises to all of His followers.

Addictions a Banquet in the Grave

Book Description

What is the basic point of this book? Theology makes a difference. The basic theology for addictions is that the root problem goes deeper than our genetic makeup. Addictions are ultimately a disorder of worship. Will we worship ourselves and our own desires or will we worship the true God?

Beyond Addictions

Book Description

"Beyond Addictions" is a Biblically-based, Christ-centered book that has been used in prison to successfully set men free from addictions. It is now available to everyone who wants to move beyond their addictions to experience new life in Christ.***** "Beyond Addictions" begins with a Biblical description of the problem, and directs you to the solution that is found in a practical, daily relationship with Jesus Christ. The book relies heavily upon the application of scripture; more than 200 passages are employed throughout to show you how God can set you free, and keep you free, from all addiction. Assignments are also included to enable you to apply the lessons learned in each chapter. Here are some comments from former students and others who are familiar with Beyond Addictions.***** "This course was instrumental in making a real change, transforming my thinking and my behavior. God used it to set me free in prison and to keep me free now that I'm on the outside.***** After re-reading the "Beyond Addictions" book, I realized how much of it I have incorporated into my daily life since my release two years ago. I heartily recommend it for anyone who truly wants to move beyond all addictions into a free and meaningful life."***** John D. Whitehead-- Beyond Addictions Graduate 2008***** "In 2002, I participated in the first Beyond Addictions class. It helped me understand who I was in Christ, which transitioned me from being a user of drugs and people to a worshiper of Jesus. As I began to understand who I was in Christ, the desire to worship Him grew, and the old lifestyle simply began to fall away.***** I encourage you to not just read but put into practice the contents of this book and you'll find that in worshiping Jesus, you'll truly find the 'good life.'"***** Jeremy Parker, Beyond Addictions Graduate 2002"***** Addictions are a mighty big problem for Christians and non-Christians alike, but the power of God is even mightier. In Psalm 119:9 David tells us how to live a clean life, 'How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.' "Beyond Addictions" shows you how to cleanse your life from the inside, as you apply the Word of God.***** God meant life to be lived. Some need a little extra help. I believe Beyond Addictions is that extra help, and I strongly recommend it."***** Rodney Finch, Senior Pastor, Calvary Chapel of Cary, NC***** "While serving as facility head of Dan River Prison Work Farm from 2003 to 2010 it was my pleasure to observe the development and growth of certain inmates involved with the Beyond Addictions study. The men routinely made the transition with biblical values into their daily practices, and carried the training forward. I received visits, calls and notes from released inmates who had participated in the program, and wanted to share success stories with me. The life choices taught and exampled in Beyond Addictions freed the men in many different ways."***** George Solomon, Regional Director, North Carolina Department of Corrections***** If you or someone you know has ever struggled with addiction, any addiction, then I urge you to read this book. Beyond Addictions provides hope for your future, and a solid foundation to re-build your life upon.*****Jeff Rudd
