Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Book Description

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by TPRC at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemina tion phases of the activity was transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we have concluded that it will be in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by a well-known publishing house to assure improved service and better communication. Hence, effective with this Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences will be disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. As we embark on this new partnership with Plenum, we also initiate a new venture in that this important annual reference work now covers Canadian universities as well as those in the United States. We are sure that this broader base will greatly enhance the value of these volumes.

Textbook of Peritoneal Dialysis

Book Description

In 1994, the expert knowledge of Ram Gokal and Karl D. Nolph, the two foremost figures in the field of peritoneal dialysis, was combined to produce the first edition of the Textbook of Peritoneal Dialysis. The work quickly became recognised as the `gold standard' for those working in the field. Since its conception, however, our understanding of peritoneal dialysis related physiology, kinetics and clinical outcomes, as well as the concepts of intraperitoneal chemotherapy, has increased sufficiently to make an updated and completely revised edition of the work necessary. An expansion of the editorial team by fellow-experts Ramesh Khanna and Raymond Krediet enabled an even more comprehensive approach to be taken. This second edition reasserts the book's uniqueness in its detailed discussion of the topic, making it required reading for all those working within the field of peritoneal dialysis.

Biomedical Engineering of Pancreatic, Pulmonary, and Renal Systems, and Applications to Medicine

Book Description

Biomedical Engineering Modeling of Pancreatic, Respiratory, and Renal Regulatory Systems, and their Medical Assessments addresses the need for biomedical engineering to provide physiological analysis of organ systems and their medical applications to help enable quantitative formulation of physiological systems and defining their functions and dysfunctions, leading to precision diagnostics of diabetes, lung diseases, and kidney failure, often in the form of non-dimensional indices. The book chapters also deal with treatment systems, namely automated insulin infusion systems, hemodialysis, and peritoneal dialysis. The book is formulated to solve many physiological, bioengineering, and medical problems. - Covers foundational concepts of the emerging fields of quantitative physiology and computational medicine, developing the biomedical engineering modeling of three important organ systems: pancreas, lungs, and kidneys - Provides readers with detailed understanding of novel biomedical engineering strategies in key areas, such as pancreatic system engineering, glucose-insulin regulatory system engineering, pulmonary system engineering, and renal system engineering - Provides in-depth technical coverage of computational modeling techniques and applied mathematics for these important physiological systems, including differential equations and the associated MATLAB datasets for all applied diagnostic and treatment examples

Peritoneal Dialysis Today

Book Description

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an invaluable tool in the treatment of patients with end-stage renal disease, which does not preclude a renal transplant, but incurs lower costs than other treatment options and represents an alternative when the vascular access is not feasible. Moreover, PD can be integrated in the armamentarium of different therapies and constitutes an important option when logistical or organizational problems are present. The publication on hand gives an account of the most recent studies on PD outcome and adequacy, exploring how different fluids, schedules and techniques may help to determine the most tolerated and effective dialysis for each patient. Novel systems including continuous flow PD are probing new limits of efficiency and performance. Biocompatibility and adequate correction of anemia are also among the issues discussed in this book, giving the reader the opportunity to refresh or expand his knowledge in the field. This publication definitely deserves a place on the desk of those who are engaged in the day-by-day activity of PD.

Nolph and Gokal's Textbook of Peritoneal Dialysis

Book Description

Nolph and Gokal's Text Book of Peritoneal Dialysis, Third Edition, covers advances made in the field for the past 30 years. During the past two decades, the time during which this therapy has been increasingly utilized, this text has continued to be recognized as the major source of the discipline's base knowledge. The evolution of this text to its newest edition parallels the growth of peritoneal dialysis from Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis in the eighties to the current therapy that encompasses manual and automated therapies with full emphasis on adequacy of dialysis dose. Peritoneal dialysis represents an intracorporeal technique for blood purification. This unique dialysis system represents one of many human attempts to manipulate nature for sustenance of life. The past few years of advances have focused on further improvement of the technique. Areas that have fueled the interest of researchers include: (1) Physiology of high transporters (and the role of genetics and inflammation); (2) Continued debate over the most appropriate adequacy indices (small solute clearances, large solute clearances, clinical assessment etc.); (3) Understanding, preventing and treating the MIA syndrome in PD patients ( including the roles of leptin, and adiponectin); (4) Pathogenesis and newer management strategies of vascular calcification; (5) Continued improvements in infectious complications including peritonitis; (6) Further improvements in catheter technology; (7) Automated techniques; (8) Explaining and correcting PD underutilization; (9) Rationale and applications of newer dialysis solutions; (10) New understanding and approaches to management of osteodystrophy; (11) Refinements in anemia management including new insights in iron metabolism in PD patients; (12) Further definition of indications for PD; (13) The ideal time to initiate dialysis. Newer insight into host defense mechanisms have also made the past decade of advances in the field more meaningful for clinicians. This text also covers the knowledge gained from animal models of peritoneal dialysis. Nolph and Gokal's Textbook of Peritoneal Dialysis, Third Edition is a compilation of the latest knowledge in the field. It cites and describes in great detail, the new discoveries and the evolution of understanding the subject of these discoveries.

Peritoneal Dialysis - State-of-the-Art 2012

Book Description

This publication contains the most recent findings in the field as presented by the outstanding faculty of the 2012 International Vicenza Course on Peritoneal Dialysis. After 30 years, this course is still one of the main educational events in the field of peritoneal dialysis as well as other disciplines including CKD, hemodialysis and critical care nephrology. The publication of the book in time for the course represents another success of the Vicenza team. The experts of the world and the related industry met in Vicenza for this important anniversary which is celebrated by this book representing not only a milestone in the history of the Department of Nephrology and the International Renal Research Institute of Vicenza, but also and above all an extraordinary educational tool for all physicians and nurses interested in peritoneal dialysis today.
