Book Description

This French comedy by Moliere is one of the most performed plays in the history of theatre. The cantankerous Harpagon is hoarding every cent he can, making sure that his two children, Elise and Cleante, live under his oppressive control. Harpagon's daughter Elise has fallen in love with a handsome young fellow, Valere, who pretends to be a servant in the household, despite the fact of his noble birth. In a bizarre happenstance, both Cleante and Harpagon are pursuing the same young woman, Marianne. Meanwhile, scheming servants and others are attempting to confiscate Harpagon's money, much of which is buried. The convoluted plot eventually leads to a hilarious and satisfying conclusion.
