Book Description
As the result of many years of research, this Corpus of the 16th century Italian Medals includes all the medals made by Italian artists during the 16th century. More than three thousand medals have been studied and described. Many of them (about a thousand) were unknown to Alfred Armand and, thus, they were not part of his classic work. Furthermore, a careful research work allowed to come to many new attributions. Almost all the medals are illustrated in the tables of the third volume in order to allow a quick visual survey of the medals studied. Complete alphabetically-ordered indexes of artists, personalities, and legends make it easy to consult. A general introduction describes the criteria and the methods used in the work. All the medals are supplied with a card which includes: legends and descriptions of obverses and reverses, technical data, explanatory notes on the reason why the medal was made, and references. The artists biographies have been treated widely and every personality portrayed has been provided with a brief biography, when known. Introduction, biographies, and comments are both in Italian and in English.
