Charlotte Posenenske


Book Description

This catalogue traces the evolution of Posenenske's practice from early experiments with mark making to transitional aluminium wall reliefs to industrially fabricated modular sculptures, which are produced in unlimited series and assembled or arranged by consumers at will.Posenenske exhibited widely during the brief period (1956-68) that she was active as an artist, alongside peers such as Hanne Darboven, Donald Judd, and Sol LeWitt.Her work is distinguished by its radically open-ended nature: she used permutation and contingency as playful conceptual devices to oppose compositional hierarchy and invite the public to collaborate by reconfiguring her variable sculptures.Embracing reductive geometry, repetition, and industrial fabrication, she developed a form of mass-produced Minimalism that addressed the pressing socioeconomic concerns of the 1960s by circumventing the art market and rejecting established formal and cultural hierarchies.Published on the occasion of the exhibition, Charlotte Posenenske: Work in Progress at Dia:Beacon, New York (8 March - 9 September 2019), before travelling to Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (18 October 2019 - 8 March 2020), Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen Düsseldorf (4 April - 2 August 2020), and Mudam Luxembourg--Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean (2 October 2020 - 10 January 2021).Co-published with Dia Art Foundation.

Book Description

Deinstitutionalizing Art of the Nomadic Museum explores the possibility of the "nomadic museum" to facilitate social and political resistance through engagement with critical art practices and imagery. Grounded in a decade-long art therapy project in a contemporary art museum setting, this book offers a theoretically rich conceptualization of this experience. The text establishes an institutional critique of both the dominant psychopathology discourse and the instrumentalizations of art practices. Innovative in its approach, the results are analyzed in the framework of subjects such as hegemony-subalternity, subjectivity, resistance, the nomadic, critical art practices, narratives and minor language, deinstitutionalization, anti-psychiatries as well as institutional therapy. With a special focus on Latin America, international artists’ writings and works are intersected with the thoughts of curators and museum decision makers. Conservation of Contemporary Art

This open access book investigates whether and how theoretical findings and insights in contemporary art conservation can be translated into the daily work practices of conservators or, vice versa, whether and how the problems and dilemmas encountered in conservation practice can inform broader research questions and projects. For several decades now, the conservation of contemporary art has been a dynamic field of research and reflection. Because of contemporary art’s variable constitution, its care and management calls for a fundamental rethinking of the overall research landscape of museums, heritage institutions, private-sector organizations and universities. At first, this research was primarily pursued by conservation professionals working in or with museums and other heritage organizations, but increasingly academic researchers and universities became involved, for instance through collaborative projects. This book is the result of such collaboration. It sets out to bridge the “gap” between theory and practice by investigating conservation practices as a form of reflection and reflection as a form of practice.
