Manual of the American Railway Engineering Association

Book Description

Excerpt from Manual of the American Railway Engineering Association: The Object of This Association Is the Advancement of Knowledge Pertaining to the Scientific and Economic Location, Construction, Operation and Maintenance of Railways; Its Action Is Not Binding Upon Its Members We should not forget that we are the servants of the investors in railway securities and that it is our duty to endeavor to secure the largest possible return on the capital invested. It is the function of the railway to furnish transportation to the public with the maximum amount of speed and safety to persons and property, the greatest convenience to its patrons, and at a minimum cost. We should have it in mind that the highest economy in the location, construction, maintenance and operation can only be obtained when the interest on cost of construction, plus the expense of maintenance and operation, are kept down to the minimum.
