Orange county was formed in 1734 from Spottsylvania County and comprised as area on both sides of the Blue Ridge Mountains out of which has subsequently been formed more than 36 counties. In 1743, Fredericksburg County was formed from Orange and in 1745, Augusta County was formed. In 1749, Culpeper County was formed from it and in 1838 Greene County was formed from Orange, It is surrounded by Albemarle, Louisa, Spottsylvania, Culpeper, Madison and Greene.

John Carlton was born ca. 1720 (birthplace unknown). He married Elizabeth Wallace of Virginia prior to 1755. They were the parents of five boys and one girl and lived the state of Virginia. Descendants lived primarily in Virginia, North Carolina, Alabama, Texas and elsewhere.
