Chemical and Biochemical Applications of Lasers V1

Book Description

Chemical and Biochemical Applications of Lasers aims to give a general introduction to as well as an evaluation of the successful application of lasers in various areas, especially in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry. The book begins with a basic knowledge of general laser physics and the types of lasers, then moves on to more specific topics that include the Raman spectra of biological materials; laser spectroscopy of gas phase ions; and optical analogs of magnetic spectroscopy. The text also discusses the molecular beams; the energy flow in polyatomic molecules; and the different properties of molecules in relation to electronical excitation and quasi-electric light scattering. Studies of different chemical reactions are also included. The text is recommended for chemists, biochemists, and chemical physicists who want to know more about lasers and its applications to their respective fields. The book will also be helpful for those concerned with the chemical reactions lasers can bring about and for those who want to conduct further studies regarding laser uses.

Spectroscopy of Systems with Spatially Confined Structures

Book Description

Nanometer scale physics is progressing rapidly: the top-down approach of semiconductor technology will soon encounter the scale of the bottom-up approaches of supramolecular chemistry and spatially localized excitations in ionic crystals. Advances in this area have already led to applications in optoelectronics. More may be expected. This book deals with the role of structure confinement in the spectroscopic characteristics of physical systems. It examines the fabrication, measurement and understanding of the relevant structures. It reports progress in the theory and in experimental techniques, starting with the consideration of fundamental principles and leading to the frontiers of research. The subjects dealt with include such spatially resolved structures as quantum wells, quantum wires, quantum dots, and luminescence, in both theoretical and practical terms.

Structure of Soviet Maser and Laser Research

Book Description

An attempt is made to outline the key avenues of research and the functional distribution of the leading Soviet scientific personnel engaged in maser development. For purposes of this study, a correlative analysis was applied to the published literature to develop the functional relationships among individual papers and their authors. Such correlative analysis was applied to significant research reports, reviews of scientific development, tutorial papers, and popular articles published in the USSR in the field of maser research since its inception, around 1954, to the present. The four main areas of Soviet maser research which are presented graphically are: (1) semiconductors (infrared and optical ranges); (2) paramagnetics (all ranges); (3) gas media (infrared and optical ranges); and (4) molecular beams (microwave range). (Author).
