Since they first arose in the 1970s and early 1980s, quantum groups have proved to be of great interest to mathematicians and theoretical physicists. The theory of quantum groups is now well established as a fascinating chapter of representation theory, and has thrown new light on many different topics, notably low-dimensional topology and conformal field theory. The goal of this book is to give a comprehensive view of quantum groups and their applications. The authors build on a self-contained account of the foundations of the subject and go on to treat the more advanced aspects concisely and with detailed references to the literature. Thus this book can serve both as an introduction for the newcomer, and as a guide for the more experienced reader. All who have an interest in the subject will welcome this unique treatment of quantum groups.

This book contains most of the nonstandard material necessary to get acquainted with this new rapidly developing area. It can be used as a good entry point into the study of representations of quantum groups. Among several tools used in studying representations of quantum groups (or quantum algebras) are the notions of Kashiwara's crystal bases and Lusztig's canonical bases. Mixing both approaches allows us to use a combinatorial approach to representations of quantum groups and toapply the theory to representations of Hecke algebras. The primary goal of this book is to introduce the representation theory of quantum groups using quantum groups of type $A {r-1 {(1) $ as a main example. The corresponding combinatorics, developed by Misra and Miwa, turns out to be thecombinatorics of Young tableaux. The second goal of this book is to explain the proof of the (generalized) Leclerc-Lascoux-Thibon conjecture. This conjecture, which is now a theorem, is an important breakthrough in the modular representation theory of the Hecke algebras of classical type. The book is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in representation theory of algebraic groups and quantum groups, the theory of Hecke algebras, algebraic combinatorics, andrelated fields.

2012 Reprint of 1930 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This work is an important update and reworking of Fisher's "The Rate of Interest," first published in 1907. Very fundamental changes in the nature of the world economy, principally World War I, war financing, the sensational inflation of the currencies of the combatants, and the remarkable developments in new scientific, industrial and agricultural methods had occurred; all requiring integration into a new theory. Fisher called interest "an index of a community's preference for a dollar of present [income] over a dollar of future income." He labeled his theory of interest the "impatience and opportunity" theory. Interest rates, Fisher postulated, result from the interaction of two forces: the "time preference" people have for capital now, and the investment opportunity principle (that income invested now will yield greater income in the future).

How do you teach tolerance, self-awareness, and responsibility? How can you help children deal with fear, mistrust, or aggression? Play a game with them! Games are an ideal way to help children develop social and emotional skills; they are exciting, relaxing, and fun. 101 LIFE SKILLS GAMES FOR CHILDREN: LEARNING, GROWING, GETTING ALONG (Ages 6-12) is a resource that can help children understand and deal with problems that arise in daily interactions with other children and adults. These games help children develop social and emotional skills and enhance self-awareness. The games address the following issues: dependence, aggression, fear, resentment, disability, accusations, boasting, honesty, flexibility, patience, secrets, conscience, inhibitions, stereotypes, noise, lying, performance, closeness, weaknesses, self confidence, fun, reassurance, love, respect, integrating a new classmate, group conflict. Organized in three main chapters: (I-Games, You-Games and We-Games), the book is well structured and easily accessible. It specifies an objective for every game, gives step-by-step instructions, and offers questions for reflection. It provides possible variations for each game, examples, tips, and ideas for role plays. Each game contains references to appropriate follow-up games and is illustrated with charming drawings.
