All this, including the man uscript, was of course destroyed of the printed portions not even the proofs having been preserved. Various causes have delayed the reproduction of what was lost. At length it is given to the public, though with a painful consciousness of many faults in the work, and with the single hope that in the attractions of the topic and the honest intention of the writer some compensation for these may be found.
