Memoirs and Letters of Madame Malibran, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Memoirs and Letters of Madame Malibran, Vol. 1 of 2 These Operas succeeding, Congreve and Sir John Vanbrugh, on the first night of opening their new Haymarket Theatre, performed a translated opera called the Temple of Love but the music being German, and the fashion of that time, as at the present, inclining chiefly towards the compositions of Italian masters, the speculation of these old dramatists was not a successful one. Addison en deavoured to administer to the growing taste by writing an opera called Rosamond, to which Thomas Clayton attempted to compose; but as this was not only not an Italian production, but about the poorest stufl' that ever assumed the name of music, its existence lasted only three nights. It was succeeded by Thomyris, Queen of Scythia, from the pen of Motteux, with a selection from the compositions of Scarlatti and Bononcini; which, although not so much relished at first as Camilla, the following season rivalled it in popularity for a period of six weeks - they being then played at Drury Lane on alternate nights. Diary and Letters of Madame D'Arblay, Vol. 2 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Diary and Letters of Madame D'arblay, Vol. 2 of 2 In the evening came my dearest father, who gave up the Opera to spend it with me; and brought all his letters and papers, and was excellently in spirits, and made me truly happy. I have never seen him better - gayer sweeter. He showed me a letter of my Susan's, and another of Charlotte's, and one from James, all exhilarating to me, and all shown with glee and pleasure. Mr. Smelt joined us for one half hour, and was very charming. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Life and Letters of Maria Edgeworth, Vol. 2 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Maria Edgeworth, Vol. 2 of 2 I Am sure that you have heard of us and of all we have done and seen from Edgeworthstown as far as Berne; from thence we went to Thun; there we took char-a-bancs, little low carriages, like half an Irish jaunting-car, with four wheels, and a square tarpaulin awning over our heads. Jolting along on these vehicles, which would go over a house, I am sure, without being overturned or without being surprised, we went - the Swiss postilion jolting along at the same round rate up and down, without ever looking back to see whether the carriages and passengers follow, yet now and then turning to point to mountains, glaciers, and cascades. The valley of Lauterbrunn is beautiful: a clear, rushing, cascady stream rushes through it; fine chestnuts, walnuts, and sycamores scattered through; the verdure on the mountains between the woods fresh and bright. Pointed mountains covered with snow in the midst of every sign of flowery summer strike us with a sense of the sublime which never grows familiar.
