In December 1948, Henri Cartier-Bresson traveled to China at the request of Life magazine. He wound up staying for ten months and captured some of the most spectacular moments in China’s history: he photographed Beijing in “the last days of the Kuomintang,” and then headed back to Shanghai, where he bore witness to the new regime’s takeover. Moreover, in 1958, Henri Cartier-Bresson was one of the first Western photographers to go back to China to explore the changes that had occurred over the preceding decade. The “picture stories” he sent to Magnum and Life on a regular basis played a key role in Westerners’ understanding of Chinese political events. Many of these images are among the best-known and most significant photographs in Cartier-Bresson’s oeuvre; his empathy with the populace and sense of responsibility as a witness making them an important part of his legacy. Henri Cartier-Bresson: China 1948-1949, 1958 allows these photographs to be reexamined along with all of the documents that were preserved: the photographer’s captions and comments, contact sheets, and abundant correspondence, as well as the published versions that appeared in both American and European magazines. Menschenrechte wurden im Verlauf des 20. Jahrhunderts zu einem wichtigen Bezugspunkt nationaler und internationaler Politik. Die vorliegende Quellensammlung versteht sich als Angebot, diese Entwicklung nachvollziehbar zu machen. Die hier versammelten lebensgeschichtlichen Interviews geben Aufschluss darüber, was unter dem Kampf für Menschenrechte im Verlauf der letzten Jahrzehnte verstanden wurde. Die befragten Aktivistinnen, Völkerrechtler, Anwälte, NGO-Mitarbeiterinnen, Politiker und Politikerinnen geben dabei ganz unterschiedliche Antworten auf die Fragen, wofür sie eigentlich gekämpft haben und wie ihr Engagement in der alltäglichen Praxis aussah. Der Stellenwert, den dieser Einsatz im Leben von Menschen einnahm, schwankte dabei und war gesellschaftlichen, politischen und individuellen Konjunkturen unterworfen. Und nicht alles, was im Nachhinein als Einsatz für Menschenrechte erschien, war ursprünglich auch so gemeint. Neue Sachlichkeit 1918-33

Neue Sachlichkeit is thought by many to have too many diverse elements to be a unified movement. Originally divided by G.F. Hartlaub into two 'wings', Neue Sachlichkeit has since been broken down by critics into more groups, sometimes with opposing styles or regional influences. However, the importance of these divisions has rarely been explored in depth. Unlike previous surveys, which accept Neue Sachlichkeit as a divided entity, this book shows for the first time that in spite of its divisions, it may still be regarded as a unified, coherent movement. While different artists may have sought to express different specific concerns, what they all had in common was that they were uncomfortable with the world as it stood, and it is the way that this was expressed, making use of the object, that gave Neue Sachlichkeit its unity. This was just as true of the literature and photography of Neue Sachlichkeit, where the same themes as those found in the painting were frequently used. The fact that these are shared themes across different cultural media demonstrates that Neue Sachlichkeit reflected a mood of its time, and this book explores the ways in which this mood was expressed.

Photography, cinema, and video have irrevocably changed the ways in which we view and interpret images. Indeed, the mechanical reproduction of images was a central preoccupation of twentieth-century philosopher Walter Benjamin, who recognized that film would become a vehicle not only for the entertainment of the masses but also for consumerism and even communism and fascism. In this volume, experts in film studies and art history take up the debate, begun by Benjamin, about the power and scope of the image in a secular age. Part I aims to bring Benjamin's concerns to life in essays that evoke specific aspects and moments of the visual culture he would have known. Part II focuses on precise instances of friction within the traditional arts brought on by this century's changes in the value and mission of images. Part III goes straight to the image technologies themselves—photography, cinema, and video—to isolate distinctive features of the visual cultures they help constitute. There can be no doubt that there is a link between early Christian statements on human dignity and the corresponding modern concept, as it appears ever more frequently in current bioethical debates. This study attempts to throw light on the surprisingly complex process of the emergence of such a Christian concept of human dignity in antiquity and portrays it as a process governed by contradictions and antagonisms: between biblical and platonic anthropology; between a platonic and a stoic perception of humanity; between gnostic and antignostic cosmology; between biblically based criticism of human culture on the one hand and heilsgeschichtlichem cultural optimism on the other hand; between Greek and Roman thinking.
