This book presents the design of different switching and resonant devices using the present state-of-the-art radio frequency (RF) micromachining (MEMS) technology. Different topologies of MEMS switches have been discussed considering optimum performances over microwave to millimeter wave frequency range. Wide varieties of micromachined switching networks starting from single-pole-double-throw (SPDT) to single-pole-fourteen-throw (SP14T) are discussed utilizing vertical and lateral actuation movements of the switch. Different transduction mechanisms of micromachined resonators are highlighted that includes capacitive, piezoelectric, and piezoresistive types. The book provides major design guidelines for the development of MEMS-based digital phase shifters, tunable filters, and antennas with extensive measurement data. Apart from the radio frequency (RF) requirements, an extensive guideline is given for the improvement of the reliability of micromachined switches and digital phase shifters where multiple switches are operating simultaneously. It takes multiple iterations and extensive characterizations to conclude with a reliable MEMS digital phase shifter, and these aspects are given one of the prime attentions in this book. Detailed performance analysis of metamaterial inspired MEMS switches is then discussed for application in millimeter wave frequency bands up to about 170 GHz. The book concludes with future research activities of RF MEMS technology and its potential in space, defense, sensors, and biomedical applications.

This book discusses the main issues of fabrication and design, and applications of micromachined resonant devices, including techniques commonly used for processing the output signal of resonant micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). Concepts of resonance are introduced, with an overview of fabrication techniques for micromachined devices – important to understand as design options will depend on how the device will be fabricated. Also explained: excitation and signal detection methods; an analytic model of device behavior (a valuable design tool); numerical simulation techniques; issues of damping and noise for resonant MEMS; electronic interfacing; packaging issues; and numerous examples of resonant MEMS from academia and industry. - Offers numerous academic and industrial examples of resonant MEMS - Provides an analytic model of device behaviour - Explains two-port systems in detail - Devotes ample space to excitation and signal detection methods - Covers issues of damping and noise for resonant MEMS, two topics of particular importance for high-Q devices

In this volume, Micromachining - New Trends and Applications, researchers from distant parts of the world have combined efforts and contributed their ideas and research work on micromachining. Their chapters will give you the opportunity to learn about materials, techniques, applications, challenges, and recent advancements in micromachining technology as well as about the state of the current micromachining market. Chapters also discuss concepts of micro-scale electronic component manufacturing, advancements in micromachining techniques of micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) piezoresistive pressure sensors to minimize offset drift due to humidity and temperature, the principles and classifications of force measuring systems with zero-compliance suspension, and triangular microcavity fabrication using micro-electrical discharge machining.

An Introduction to Surface-Micromachining provides for the first time a unified view of surface-micromachining. Building up from the basic building block of microfabrication techniques, to the general surface-micromachining design, it will finish with the theory and design of concrete components. An Introduction to Surface-Micromachining connects the manufacturing process, microscale phenomena, and design data to physical form and function. This book will be of interest to mechanical engineers looking to scale down into micromachining and microelectronics designers looking to move horizontally to micromachining.
