Military Surgery of the Zone of the Advance

Book Description

Excerpt from Military Surgery of the Zone of the Advance This concise vade-mecum on the treatment of war wounds is, in no sense of the word, a text-book on military surgery. Its essential aim is to give a resume of the primary treatment which, in the light of painfully acquired experience on the western front during the past three years, has proved most satisfactory in the opinion of those best qualified to judge. Little or no attempt has been made to discuss pathology or diagnosis, fundamentals with which the army surgeon is deemed sufficiently well equipped. It is written essentially for the Medical officer who, well grounded though he be in the principles and practice of his art in times of peace, finds himself now confronted with an environment and a class of traumatic lesions foreign to him. Civil surgery is mainly directed toward the control of pathological conditions, through the agency of wounds deliberately made by the surgeon, usually under a favorable and selected environment. In his newly assumed role of military surgeon the same doctor is no longer able to choose his own conditions; he has to make the best of those in which his lot is cast. As a famous French surgeon concisely states the matter: "On fait ce que l'on peut, ou on le peut, quand on le peut, comme on le peut," i. e., "One does what one can, where one can, when one can, how one can." No longer allowed to consider the case of the individual as paramount, his treatment must invariably be subservient to the military necessities of the moment. This brings up a question of fundamental importance with which we are immediately confronted. With us, speaking in general terms, neither the physician nor the sanitary personnel has had any previous knowledge of military matters. Outlines of Military Surgery (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Outlines of Military Surgery In this view of the matter I am fully borne out by the existing regulations of the British service at the present moment. By an edict of his late Majesty, the appointments of physicians to the forces were annulled, while the surgeons and assistant-surgeons retain their place and it is not a little curious to observe, that after repeated changes in the designa tion, rank, titles, and implied acquirements of the medical Officers Of the army, we should now appear to be acting in conformity to the sentiments which prevailed upon this sub ject more than two hundred years ago. A Practical Treatise on Military Surgery (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Military Surgery Being a Discourse delivered by the Author at the Opening of a Course of Lee tures on Military Surgery, at Bellevue Medical College, New York, April, 1861. Gentlemen - War is the normal condition of mankind; pe.ace is the abnormal condition. This statement is not flattering to a people claiming Christianity and boasting of its civilization it is nevertheless true, and the fact must be accepted. History is little else than a record Of the contentions, conflicts, and conquests of nations. The sword and the cross, conventional emblems of battle-fields, stand as thick upon the round surface Of the terrestrial sphere as stars upon the surface Of the celestial. Each year, and almost every month in the year, commemorates some new achievement of arms, and places a new symbol upon the map; SO that now, in the middle of the nineteenth cen tury, as when Isaiah wrote, it is only in prophetic Vision that we see the approach of that happy day when swords Shall be beaten into ploughshares and Spears into pruning hooks, and nations Shall not learn war any more. A Treatise on Military Surgery and Hygiene (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Treatise on Military Surgery and Hygiene But surgery, like many other departments of knowledge which have been compelled to submit to this tyranny, and to contribute reluctantly to the perfection of a barbarous art, has, in its application to the purposes of war, we are happy to say, other and more legitimate ends. It is equally the mission of the Military Surgeon to prevent, as far as possible, all useless expenditure of life. In civilized war fare life is spared whenever a firelock is grounded, or an arm is disabled; and, so well is this understood, the wounded soldier does not hesitate to throw himself upon the mercy of his captors for surgical aid, since he is equally certain of receiving succor from the surgical corps of a foe as of a friend. Consider how much this serves to soften the savage aspect of war; that if battles must be fought, the results should be obtained with as little sacrifice of life, with as little mutilation and suffering as possible. The world is indebted to our profession for this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
