Misread Passages of Scripture (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Misread Passages of Scripture Perhaps there is no passage of Scripture more constantly misunderstood than these simple words; and certainly there is no misunderstanding of Scripture which has exercised a more detrimental influence on the life and development of \the church. The whole passage con tains the very marrow of the doctrine of Christ concern ing His kingdom. It is the basis of its constitution. To this, its subjects have rightly looked in all ages for instruction as to its fundamental spirit, principles, and aims. Words more solemn, more pregnant, were never spoken in this world, in this universe, than these. They were spoken at the very crisis of universal destinies. They form the dividing line between the two eternities. From eternity all things had been working towards that hour - the consummation of the incarnation and to eter nity the influence of that hour would go forth, remould ing, regenerating all the worlds. Beyond any words that have ever been spoken, these words are worthy of intense and reverent attention. They are the words with which the Son of God passed on to the cross, that He might pass up to the throne. An Expositor's Note-Book

Book Description

Excerpt from An Expositor's Note-Book: Or, Brief Essays on Obscure or Misread Scriptures I need only add that the reader will be the more likely to benefit by them if he will be at the pains to read for himself the several Scriptures on which they are based; and that, wherever he finds any Scripture cited in other words than those of our Authorised Version, he may be sure that I have tried to give the sense of the original Greek or Hebrew more exactly. Biblical Expositions

Book Description

Excerpt from Biblical Expositions: Or, Brief Essays on Obscure or Misread Scriptures Generous and cordial' that I now venture to publish what is virtually a second volume of it, although it appears under another name. The new name is a concession I owe to some of the ablest and kindest of my critics, who, while they commended the contents of the previous volume, pointed out that it was not of the nature of a Note-book, since, instead of giving brief expository suggestions, it was composed of elaborate studies of difficult or misread Scriptures; and that, therefore, the title was inaccurate and misleading. In deference to their verdict, the justice of which I acknowledge, I have given the present series of essays and discourses another, and I hope a more accurate, title. But, in substance, this second volume is very much what the first was. In this, as in that, I have selected obscure, misread, or specially interesting passages from different parts of the Bible for explanation and comment. In this too, as in that, I have collected papers which have already appeared in various periodicals, from the.
