Mission San Juan Capistrano celebrates a time when the pace was slower, food was savored, and mealtime was part of a grand tradition. This beautiful cookbook contains tried and true recipes; impressionist, early California artwork from the Irvine Museum; photographs of Mission San Juan Capistrano; and historical side bars. In 1996, as a fundraiser for Community Presbyterian Church of San Juan Capistrano's Friends of Music, this collection of recipes was assembled with contributions solicited from current and former members. It included favorites not only from the cooks themselves, but from the congregation as a whole. We were fortunate to acquire some recipes from long-time members who had already passed away, and those were included. Sadly, in the intervening years, many more of these cooks have left us. Lorna Collins and Anne Larson edited the contributions. Larry Collins laid out the book. Margaret Stephenson created the cover art and had the books spiral bound for sale during the Christmas holidays. We recently came across the original files and decided to resurrect the book since folks have asked about it. We also discovered a few recipes, which were inadvertently omitted from the original book. Profit from this book will benefit our preschool and kindergarten. http: //www.sjcpres.org

Excerpt from San Juan Capistrano Mission It was owing to the animosity of Rivera, as we know from the narrative on San Diego, that the two Fathers Lasuen and Amurrio were compelled to remain idle for nearly a year. Peremptory or ders from Viceroy Bucareli at last put an end to the chicanery. Fr. Serra, then at San Diego, was so overjoyed when the orders arrived that he rang the bells and celebrated a High Mass in thanksgiving. Having received orders to see that Mission San Juan Capistrano be established without delay on the site pre viously selected, Rivera detailed a guard of ten soldiers under a corporal. Instead of sending back Fr. Lasuen to lay the founda tions, Fr. Serra appointed him senior missionary of San Diego.
