In November 2015, Buenos Aires, Argentina became the location of several important events for geo-professionals, with the simultaneous holding of the 8th South American Congress on Rock Mechanics (SCRM), the 15th Pan-American Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (XV PCSMGE), and the 6th International Symposium on Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials, as well as the 22nd Argentinean Congress of Geotechnical Engineering (CAMSIGXXII). This synergy brought together international experts, researchers, academics, professionals and geo-engineering companies in a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss current and future practices in the areas of soil mechanics and rock mechanics, and their applications in civil, energy, environmental, and mining engineering. This book presents the proceedings of the 8th South American Congress on Rock Mechanics (SCRM). Topics covered include rock mechanics, rock engineering, natural resources, mining, mechanics, geology and engineering. Approximately 60% of the contributions are in English, and the remaining 40% of the contributions are in either Spanish or Portuguese.

The use of computers to solve modern scientific problems is very widespread. The impact of the improvement of our techniques for the solution of complex problems is difficult to overstate. Even our approach to most problems has been changed. Solutions to problems once thought intractable are being routinely secured. Instead of using oversimplified models, as has been the practice for the treatment of scientific systems in the past, the entire problem can now be attacked. The second edition of Computation in Modern Physics develops and presents algorithms for the solution of many types of mathematical systems, some dating as far as the last few centuries, but also quite a number that have been developed within the last 10-50 years. In this last category, close attention is paid to the rapidly developing area of Monte Carlo techniques where new conceptual views of physics problems are being brought into play. With this method, problems in a large number of dimensions can be solved through the introduction of a modern method for the representation of multidimensional functions. This book is suitable for two different levels in computational physics. The first part is an advanced introductory level and is appropriate for good students with no previous experience in computational methods or any student with some experience. Here the student is introduced to integral and differential techniques, Monte Carlo integration, basic computer architecture, methods of linear algebra, finite element techniques, digital signal processing and chaos. The second part of the book is more specialized for problems in strong interaction with emphasis on solutions to many-body scattering problems andseveral-body bound state calculations with Monte Carlo techniques. It also contains a chapter dealing with techniques for the summation of divergent series.

New Paths for Acceptance: Opening Awareness in Interpersonal Acceptance-Rejection gathers global data from recent studies on interpersonal relationships. The book focuses specifically on the influence of perceived acceptance and rejection by significant others on children's, adolescents', and adults' well-being and development. In doing this, it offers valuable insight for academics, researchers, practitioners, teachers, and service agencies to better understand the importance of including the issue of "quality of interpersonal relationships" in their research, teaching, and clinical practice. Based primarily on interpersonal acceptance-rejection theory (IPARTheory), the book broadens and advances scientific knowledge about fundamental issues such as psychological adjustment, masculinity, school and academic-related issues, family functioning, parental alienation, intimate adult relationships, and other such topics. With contributions from researchers from three continents, the volume helps raise awareness about the crucial role that interpersonal acceptance plays across cultures on key issues such as these. The uncommon cultural diversity and multi-context nature of studies included in the book give readers the opportunity to learn about some of the most recent studies in this field, and at the same time to have a privileged view of the broad scope and application of IPARTheory and research.

This book contains contributions to the 10th International Workshop on Bifurcation and Degradation in Geomaterials held in Hong Kong, May 28-30, 2014. This event marks the silver Jubilee anniversary of an international conference series dedicated to the research on localization, instability, degradation and failure of geomaterials since 1988 when its first workshop was organized in Germany. This volume of book collects the latest progresses and state-of-the-art research from top researchers around the world, and covers topics including multiscale modeling, experimental characterization and theoretical analysis of various instability and degradation phenomena in geomaterials as well as their relevance to contemporary issues in engineering practice. This book can be used as a useful reference for research students, academics and practicing engineers who are interested in the instability and degradation problems in geomechanics and geotechnical engineering.

Protein informatics is a newer name for an already existing discipline. It encompasses the techniques used in bioinformatics and molecular modeling that are related to proteins. While bioinformatics is mainly concerned with the collection, organization, and analysis of biological data, molecular modeling is devoted to representation and manipulation of the structure of proteins. Protein informatics requires substantial prerequisites on computer science, mathematics, and molecular biology. The approach chosen here, allows a direct and rapid grasp on the subject starting from basic knowledge of algorithm design, calculus, linear algebra, and probability theory. An Introduction to Protein Informatics, a professional monograph will provide the reader a comprehensive introduction to the field of protein informatics. The text emphasizes mathematical and computational methods to tackle the central problems of alignment, phylogenetic reconstruction, and prediction and sampling of protein structure. An Introduction to Protein Informatics is designed for a professional audience, composed of researchers and practitioners within bioinformatics, molecular modeling, algorithm design, optimization, and pattern recognition. This book is also suitable as a graduate-level text for students in computer science, mathematics, and biomedicine.
