From birth until death, food and drink are the keystones of human existence as eating and drinking have always sustained our imaginations as well as our bodies, feeding our common need for art. In these volumes, the American Institute of Wine & Food gathers together the imaginative fare of writers, artists, chefs, food historians, and children to celebrate and illustrate gastronomy, the art and science of eating. Writings from Michael Jackson, Sharon Olds, Michael Dorris, Margaret Visser, Charles Simic, Carol Field, and David Mas Masumoto, among others, join with the art of painters and photographers such as Frida Kahlo, Tessa Traeger, Diego Rivera, Gary Kelley, Jeffrey Alford, and Naomi Duguid. Together these offerings represent some of the best culinary works of past and present and produce a feast for both the eyes and the mind.

Grounded in archival sources, this interdisciplinary study explores the profound historical significance of the mausoleum of the Valois Dukes of Burgundy - the Chartreuse de Champmol. Although the monument is well known as the site of pivotal works of art by Claus Sluter, Melchior Broederlam, Jean de Beaumetz and others, until now art historians have not considered how these works functioned at the center of a complex social matrix. Sherry Lindquist here considers the sacred subjects of the various sculptures and paintings not merely as devotional tools or theological statements, but as profoundly influential social instruments that negotiated complex interactions of power. Lindquist's sophisticated discussion coordinates analysis of primary sources with the most up-to-date scholarship in the field of art history, not only with respect to late medieval Burgundian art, but also to more theoretical questions pertaining to reception.

In this introduction to commutative algebra, the author choses a route that leads the reader through the essential ideas, without getting embroiled in technicalities. He takes the reader quickly to the fundamentals of complex projective geometry, requiring only a basic knowledge of linear and multilinear algebra and some elementary group theory. The author divides the book into three parts. In the first, he develops the general theory of noetherian rings and modules. He includes a certain amount of homological algebra, and he emphasizes rings and modules of fractions as preparation for working with sheaves. In the second part, he discusses polynomial rings in several variables with coefficients in the field of complex numbers. After Noether's normalization lemma and Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, the author introduces affine complex schemes and their morphisms; he then proves Zariski's main theorem and Chevalley's semi-continuity theorem. Finally, the author's detailed study of Weil and Cartier divisors provides a solid background for modern intersection theory. This is an excellent textbook for those who seek an efficient and rapid introduction to the geometric applications of commutative algebra.

The 19th Century brought many medical advances and discoveries in neurology, with the famed Parisian La Salpêtrière hospital at its center. Medical giants such as Jean-Martin Charcot, Joseph Babinski, and even for a short time Sigmund Freud, walked these halls, so it is a wonder that, an equal among these men, very little exists in the literature on Georges Gilles de la Tourette. This biography is the first comprehensive volume to delve into the life, scholarship, writing, and hobbies of the famed doctor. In Part One, we learn Georges' family history, follow his schooling and mentorship under Charcot, travel to the Worlds Fair of 1900, evade an attempted assassination, all before succumbing to death by syphilis. Part Two provides an in-depth analysis of his neurological and psychiatric works, notably the epynomous neurological disorder that will forever remain “Tourette's Syndrome.” Part Three looks at the lighter side of Georges, inspecting his favorite past-times as poet, historian, and art critic. Part Four brings an extensive bibliography of Georges' complete body of work. Author Olivier Walusinski pulls together unpublished family archives, Georges' correspondence with the Parisian journalist Georges Montorgueil, journal articles, and police archives to shed an original light on the famed doctor's life and lasting legacy. These archives have never before been studied or made available to the public, making this one of the first and most comprehensive biographies available and a must-have for any medical library.
