Handbook of Research on Developing Engaging Online Courses

Book Description

Online instruction is rapidly expanding the way professors think about and plan instruction. In addition, online instructional practices are expanding and changing as new tools and strategies are adopted. It is imperative that programs and institutions of higher education explore increased online options that align with best practices to develop effective and engaging online courses. The Handbook of Research on Developing Engaging Online Courses is an essential research publication that provides multiple perspectives on improving student engagement and success in online courses. This book includes topics focused on the online learner, online course content, and effective online instruction. The content contained within the title is ideal for curriculum developers, instructional designers, IT consultants, deans, chairs, teachers, administrators, academicians, researchers, and students.

Advanced Programming for the Java 2 Platform

Book Description

Choice Outstanding Academic Title, 2008. The uniqueness of shape as a perceptual property lies in the fact that it is both complex and structured. Shapes are perceived veridically—perceived as they really are in the physical world, regardless of the orientation from which they are viewed. The constancy of the shape percept is the sine qua nonof shape perception; you are not actually studying shape if constancy cannot be achieved with the stimulus you are using. Shape is the only perceptual attribute of an object that allows unambiguous identification. In this first book devoted exclusively to the perception of shape by humans and machines, Zygmunt Pizlo describes how we perceive shapes and how to design machines that can see shapes as we do. He reviews the long history of the subject, allowing the reader to understand why it has taken so long to understand shape perception, and offers a new theory of shape. Until recently, shape was treated in combination with such other perceptual properties as depth, motion, speed, and color. This resulted in apparently contradictory findings, which made a coherent theoretical treatment of shape impossible. Pizlo argues that once shape is understood to be unique among visual attributes and the perceptual mechanisms underlying shape are seen to be different from other perceptual mechanisms, the research on shape becomes coherent and experimental findings no longer seem to contradict each other. A single theory of shape perception is thus possible, and Pizlo offers a theoretical treatment that explains how a three-dimensional shape percept is produced from a two-dimensional retinal image, assuming only that the image has been organized into two-dimensional shapes. Pizlo focuses on discussion of the main concepts, telling the story of shape without interruption. Appendixes provide the basic mathematical and computational information necessary for a technical understanding of the argument. References point the way to more in-depth reading in geometry and computational vision.

Functional Programming with C#

Book Description

After decades of relative obscurity, functional programming is finally coming into its own. With concise, easy-to-read code that supports asynchronous, concurrent processing, aspects of functional programming have begun to appear in several traditionally object-oriented languages such as C# and Java. This practical book shows C# programmers how to use functional programming features without having to navigate an entirely new language. Because of the shared runtime environment common to C# and F# languages, it's possible to use most of F#'s functional features in C# as well. Author Simon J. Painter explains how you can write functional code in C# right away, without having to install dependencies or features newer than .NET 3. You'll learn why functional programming concepts can bring immediate benefit to your work. Learn what functional programming is and how it originated Discover features of the functional paradigm using a more familiar language Start coding functionally in C# right away, without relying on third-party libraries Write code that's more robust, less error prone, and easier to test Examine less conventional ways to look at structures available in C# Explore the practicalities of using functional C# in a business environment

DIVHis brain scrambled, Jake tries to clear himself of a murder charge/divDIV /divDIVJake Pace comes to on the floor of a dungeon, where a robot jailer is killing rats. The last twenty-four hours are a blank; he doesn’t remember anything since he stepped into his skycar, chasing a tip on the Big Bang murders. For weeks the killings have stumped every officer in the government—costing six of them their lives—but a soprano named Palsy Hatchbacker told Jake she knew something that could break open the case. Before he met Miss Hatchbacker, a carnation-wearing goon spritzed Jake with a memory-wiping spray. When the police found him, he was sleeping peacefully next to Palsy’s corpse, a laser pistol in his hand. /divDIV /divDIVWhile he rots in jail, the Big Bang killer continues his rampage. Only Jake can bring him to justice, but first he must break out of an inescapable jail./div

Small Memory Software

Book Description

The phenomenal increases in processing power and memory capacity of computing hardware over recent years have allowed manufacturers to produce smaller and smaller computer systems such as palmtop PCs, smart cards and embedded control systems on domestic and industrial appliances. New techniques such as dynamic memory management and object-orientation help programming but tend to require additional memory. Standard programming techniques do not cope with these limited memory-capacity environments. This book will provide practical help for programmers developing software for this kind of environment. The major content is a series of patterns developed by the authors based on solutions which have been found to work in real-life situations. They range from small system design patterns and process management patterns, to patterns for User Interface development, compression and memory storage. This book will appeal to developers using Windows CE or building mobile telephones, smart cards, embedded devices, set-top computers - in short, all programmers working with memory-constrained systems.
