The period covered in this memoir is from 13 January to 23 October 1915 when the author was with the 1st Battalion the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) then part of 7th Brigade, 3rd Division. The whole nine months were spent in the Salient - Kemmel, Hooge, Sanctuary Wood, St Eloi- and if you want to get the feeling of what trench warfare was really like in that bloody (in more senses than one) Salient then you can do no better than read this book. Most vivid is Clapham s description of the attack on Bellewaerde Ridge, just north of Hooge, on 16 June. In fact the HAC history gives two accounts of this action, one is by the CO and the other, giving the rank and file view, is Clapham s story, extracted in full from his book. The action cost the battalion over 200 casualties, almost half the trench strength at the time. The narrative ends with the battalion being withdrawn from the line and transferred to GHQ Troops, and Clapham a corporal. A superb book.

Living the dream of the endless vacation “Anyone who has ever dreamed of leaving the city and taking their lives back to nature (and who hasn't?) will find much to contemplate in this warm and hilarious tale of rural misadventure and small town quirk, even if they have never chased a goat in a bathing suit or called 911 because there were cows in the road. Stimson's voice is endearing: both in its self-deprecation and its rapture, as she sings an only slightly conflicted love song to Vermont.” —Pam Houston, author of Contents May Have Shifted “Taking a plunge that wimpier sorts (i.e. most of us) only fantasize about, Ellen Stimson and her family packed up their house in St. Louis and threw themselves into a wildly different life in small-town Vermont. Armed with the passion-and haplessness-of wide-eyed newcomers they rescue goats and adopt chickens, do battle with skunks and bats and falling ice, and, most disastrously, buy a black hole of a general store. Through it all they manage to retain their love for their adopted home as well as one another. This is a tale to which all the cliché words absolutely apply: hilarious, heartwarming, rollicking, and, most of all, rich in the real stuff of life.” —Julia Reed, author of But Mama Always Put Vodka in Her Sangria!

BLACK LIONS, LOVE AND WAR A HISTORICAL DRAMA ON THE BRITISH--ASHANTI WARS. This work of well over a decade, is dedicated to Esi Ayensu of Cape Coast, and to the late Clive Compton, Barrister-At-Law and the late MaryAnn Compton, my loving parents who saw to it that I went to school, learned good manners and be polite, and also strong, for you may suffer long for what you may want. Everyone comes under my microscopic pen and my impeccable candor in this scholarly historical drama of love and war. And as an American I look out for the interest of the entire vast region, from as far down to Brazil Amazon, to U.S.A, Canada, Carribean Island, hoping Americans will read and enjoy my work. But this is too narrow. From my studies in Literature at U.C.L.A. where I earned a B.A. in Literature, on to my M.A. in Education at Georgia State University and my subsequent admission in the Doctoral program, I was taught NOT to see the tree but the entire forest. So now I hope that the entire World will read and enjoy my book and gain from it. It is sheer fun for me to read, create, write, and bring out my artistry, remembering always that this is what distinguishes me from the goat, the cow, the donkey and makes me human. Originate and be Scholarly and remember too that there is nothing as fiction, for the writer draws from life itself, the sine qua non of the pen. I LIVE FOR ART. MELVIN F. COMPTON [email protected]
