Excerpt from North Carolina Municipal Population, 1986 In preparing this year's municipal population estimates. Several methods were used to independently estimate the non-group quarters population of each municipality and the county balance. In each method. A current estimate of the group quarters population is added to the municipality or county balance estimate. Resulting in a total population estimate that is then independently controlled to the county estimate for 1987. The municipal population estimate is based on an average of three or four methods. Depending upon the availability of valid auto and truck registration data. Each method uses the non-group quarters population from the 1980 Federal Census as a base. Any trends used are applied to this base population. If a city has had a special census since the federal census. The special cen us and the federal census are used to develop a growth rate which is weighted in with the growth rate derived assuming no Special census. The resulting rate then is applied to the special census population at the special census date. The 1987 estimate of the population living within 1980 census municipal boundaries is added to the population in areas annexed from January 2. 1980 through July 1. 1987.
