Soundings in the Christian Mystical Tradition

Book Description

Called in a special way to listen to God's whispers, the mystics amplify not only what it means to be baptized into the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ 'and to having the Trinity living in them 'but also what is deepest in the human spirit. Mystics experience themselves as an infinite question to which only God is the answer; as an immense longing that only Love can quench; as a nothing in the face of the No-Thing. They are God's fools, troubadours 'the great artists and poets of the interior life whose learned ignorance" articulates the art of loving God, neighbor, self, the Church, and the world. In Soundings in the Christian Mystical Tradition Harvey Egan draws on fifty years of reading and teaching the mystics to sketch the varieties and passion of the mystical life across more than two millennia. Through their stories and words Egan reveals that all were conscious of the paradox of human identity 'supremely and unsurpassably manifested in the God-Man 'that the genuinely human is disclosed only through surrender to God and that the search for God cannot bypass the genuinely human. Harvey D. Egan, SJ, is the author of numerous works on Christian mysticism and the thought of Karl Rahner. He is currently professor of systematic and mystical theology at Boston College. "

Hatred of Democracy

Book Description

In this vehement defence of democracy, Jacques Rancière explodes the complacency of Western politicians who pride themselves as the defenders of political freedom. As America and its allies use their military might in the misguided attempt to export a desiccated version democracy, and reactionary strands in mainstream political opinion abandon civil liberties, Rancière argues that true democracy—government by all—is held in profound contempt by the new ruling class. In a compelling and timely analysis, Hatred of Democracy rethinks the subversive power of the democratic ideal.

Deception Redefined | A Forbidden Love, a Ruthless Power Struggle, and a Legacy of Secrets

Book Description

The story revolves around two prominent political families, each governed by a powerful matriarch who rose to power after the mysterious deaths of their husbands. These rival political groups, led by Lady Supremo Sarita Devi (Mataji) and Lady Supremo Anamika Singh (Madam), dominate the political landscape. Amid this political tension, Mataji’s son, Abhimanyu, and Anamika Singh's daughter, Sharmila, grow up under the shadows of their influential mothers. Their love story, however, is anything but simple. Both Abhimanyu and Sharmila are aware of the intense rivalry between their families and parties. They know that neither Mataji nor Anamika Singh will ever approve of their relationship. The conflict between love and loyalty creates a dilemma: for them to be together, one of them would have to leave their party and defect to the rival group, an act that would be perceived as a betrayal of their respective families and legacies. Faced with this impossible choice, they make a bold decision: they marry, and Sharmila leaves her mother’s party to join Abhimanyu’s. But their marriage, as it unfolds, appears far from the fairy tale everyone assumed. There are whispers among political circles suggesting that their love story may be a front for a larger plan, perhaps even one concocted by the two young leaders themselves. Soon after their marriage, Abhimanyu and Sharmila make an unexpected move: they resign from their respective parties and form their own independent political entity, vowing to build a new movement that transcends the legacy of their families. Although their new political party seems to be thriving, cracks begin to appear in their relationship. Sharmila, despite being a capable leader, feels overshadowed by Abhimanyu’s growing dominance. Feeling increasingly marginalized, Sharmila begins to question her choices and the power dynamics within her marriage. Abhimanyu dies under mysterious circumstances, echoing the fate of their fathers. Sharmila assumes the position of head of government, capitalizing on the opportunity to step out of her late husband’s shadow. What next?

My First Life

Book Description

The incredible story of a boy who believed in the Church and wholeheartedly embraced its rigorous discipline in order to become a priest. After reaching his dream, during the stormy years of the post-Vatican II, he was crushed by the system, which did not allow any original thinking outside of the official parameters. Reader's comment "Wow! I must say that I truly enjoyed the read. You should be proud of what you have achieved here; it is a masterpiece The story is fascinating and your writing style is impeccable. I found myself sympathizing completely with Benedict. I could feel his innate sadness at not having a companion, joy when he found Hercules again, and sadness when he heard of his tragic death. Elation when he met Little Grace, as she was a true confidante to him. Then again his sadness when he lost her too. It seemed there was an undercurrent of sadness throughout the book, almost a dark cloud hanging over him his whole life. He was never close to his parents or brother, and didn't seem to have anyone to share things or be himself with, apart from brief respites when he had Hercules and Little Grace in his life. His life was such a roller coaster of ups and downs! What shocked me most was the utter beaurocracy within the walls of the Catholic Church; how they maneuvered him out against his will! It is incredible the egos that existed among some of those Provincials and Directors, who would stop at nothing to get what they wanted (as you say in the book no matter how much blood had to be spilt). I have read over 60 books in my capacity as editor/proofreader, and your definitely ranks in the top 3!" Jessica Keet

A Kafkaesque Memoir

Book Description

A Kafkaesque Memoir is that rarity in the psychological literature: a patient's account of the complete arc of his own psychoanalysis from first session to last. It is the memoir of a literature professor who walks into a psychotherapist's office one day seeking a quick hypnotherapy fix for a driving phobia and ends up staying for a nine-year Jungian analysis that fundamentally transforms him. Looking back on his recently completed analysis, the professor recreates his near-decade-long conversation with his analyst, a dialogue that gradually unearths the roots of a deep sense of guilt he feels over an "abandoned child." This personal psychological drama unfolds in the context of certain cultural themes that have woven themselves deeply into the professor's nexus of values over a lifetime and profoundly shaped his worldview. These include: the strange parables of Franz Kafka, Zen Buddhism in America, French deconstruction, the roots of psychoanalysis in German culture and the nature and philosophical questioning of analysis itself. The enigmatic writings of Kafka, in particular, become a kind of fictive code used by the professor to probe his deepest conflicts. As the story of a long-term analysis that moves gradually through the stages of the professor's angry defensive posturing and religio-philosophical jousting to a deep mutual sympathy between patient and doctor, the book is rich in intellectual and emotional substance; but, in the professor's recalling of key life events, it offers as well a full-bodied social canvas of its time: there are, for instance, chapters that tell of a close encounter with the mafia in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, crashing a party in early 70's Harlem and navigating the underground counterculture of mid-70's Los Angeles. Personal struggle, the dance of analysis and the contemporary culture wars intersect in this absorbing tale of a man's late-life quest to heal a deeply divided self.
