Aquatic genetic resources play a crucial role in contributing to global food security and nutrition, as well as to sustainable livelihoods. However, in various international fora, FAO Members have highlighted the limitations and constraints that they face in assessing their national capacities to use, manage and conserve such resources as well as in identifying and monitoring the resources used. The main issues are limited information, inadequate national capacities and expertise, and inadequate legislation and policy frameworks. In recognition of these needs, this framework is a guideline that FAO and FAO Members can use to evaluate the capacities, infrastructures and governance tools of a country regarding the sustainable use of aquatic genetic resources. It will be of use to fish farmers, hatchery people, fisher folk, aquatic genetic resource managers, policy-makers, decision-makers, donors, consumers and academia.

Report of the Second Multi-Stakeholder Consultation on the Progressive Management Pathway for Improving Aquaculture Biosecurity (PMP/AB)

This report presents the results of a second multi-stakeholder consultation on the Progressive Management Pathway for Improving Aquaculture Biosecurity (PMP/AB), where 41 participants from government, the private sector, academe, and international agencies and donors took stock of the drivers of aquatic animal disease emergence and shared experiences in dealing with aquaculture biosecurity challenges. The four stages of the PMP/AB focus on building aquaculture biosecurity capacity through both bottom-up and top-down approaches with strong stakeholder engagement to promote application of risk management at the producer level as part of a national approach. The PMP/AB initiative is not intended to be prescriptive, and it will be possible to achieve the key outcomes through different combinations of activities. It is essential to address all key outcomes to fully complete a stage and progress to the subsequent stage.




FAO Biosecurity Toolkit

This toolkit provides practical guidance and support to develop and implement national biosecurity frameworks at the country level. It presents the benefits of a harmonized and integrated approach to biosecurity and illustrates the experiences of countries, including Belize, Norway and New Zealand, which have adopted such an approach in recent times. By providing a framework to identify cross-cutting biosecurity capacity needs based on an integrated approach, this toolkit addresses the gaps inherent in a purely sectoral approach to biosecurity. The purpose is to support governments to better manage biosecurity as a means to protect public health, agricultural production and the environment. At the same time, this will enhance the ability of countries to comply with international agreements, regulations and requirements focused on sanitary and phytosanitary measures, contributing to economic development and trade.
