Beth Brighton buys a peaceful lake home property on Big Pine Lake to try to recover her broken life after surviving a car accident that took the life of her fiance, David. Little did she know that buying this lake home would be anything but peaceful. The story begins with the prologue that introduces you to one of Beth's kitties, Lana, who is trapped hiding in the wooded lot next to Beth's property. Lana witnesses three men arguing among themselves, one of them brandishing a gun. Beth has fallen asleep in her recliner, unaware that Lana is outside and in danger. She is woken by a gunshot. Not sure if it was a dream or real, she goes to the kitchen to give the cats their well overdue evening treats and realizes that Lana is not there. She prays for courage to go out into the dark, foggy night to find Lana, but ends up finding more than she bargained for - Lana sitting next to a dead body in the wooded lot next to her property line. Detective Loggars and his partner, Detective Jensen, head the investigation which becomes even more complicated as a second dead body appears in the same place as the first body. Beth is on the top of the suspect list as there were no witnesses and she doesn't have an alibi. Also alarming for Beth is evidence that someone is searching her property for something that may have been hidden by one of the victims. She tries to work with the detectives, but Detective Loggars doesn't make it easy. Loggars isn't that comfortable around animals, never had a pet of his own; therefore, he certainly doesn't believe Beth's crew of 2 dogs and 5 cats have any smarts, let alone any above average abilities. Because of this, Detective Loggars and Beth always seem to be knocking heads, and are at odds during the investigation.
