This Status Assessment of the Niagara River Area of Concern (AOC) was conducted between May 2000 & April 2002 and included consultation between representatives of the Commission and citizens, government agencies, local industries & interest groups, and the Tuscarora Nation. The status assessment process included an examination of funding, institutional structure, roles of those involved, and public consultation. This evaluation also examines those activities occurring outside of the Remedial Action Plan (RAP) structure that foster restoration and protection of beneficial uses within the AOC. The assessment report begins with background on the AOC, including a history of water quality concerns in the River since 1912, sources of contamination, remedial measures undertaken, land use, and human health impacts of hazardous waste sites. The report then presents assessment findings, with examples to document & promote successful activities and help meet any remaining challenges. Recommendations to address those challenges are made with regard to RAP funding, co-ordination of efforts, public awareness & involvement, and appropriate technology.

Exposure to a wide variety of chemicals and drugs has become common in industrial, laboratory, and even household environments. Fortunately, global understanding and consequently global safety standards regarding the management of toxic and hazardous substances are fast approaching uniformity. The methods of handling, use, transportation, storage, and disposal in particular are moving toward standardization. As these protocols involving chemicals and drugs continue to cross international borders, students and professionals need a reliable resource to ensure they observe appropriate safety standards. The Industrial Guide to Chemical and Drug Safety covers not only current standards, but also a wealth of information on toxins to help regulatory bodies develop new protocols. Written in an accessible narrative style, the Guide covers chemicals by key classes such as solvents, pesticides, and metals, and also by key industries such as drugs, food additives, plastics, cosmetics, detergents, and soaps. The book explains the beneficial and harmful aspects of a broad range of materials to which students, trainees, skilled workers, managers, and personnel associated with regulatory agencies are exposed, with the purpose of helping them avoid the illnesses associated with the misuse of chemicals and drugs. Chapters include: -Heavy Metals -Pesticides -Industrial Solvents -Industrial Gases and Fumes -Drugs -Target Organ Toxicity -Disposal of Hazardous Chemicals -Guidance to Students and Workers -Good Laboratory Practice

Citizenship and the environment are hotly debated, as climate change places more responsibility on individuals and institutions in shaping policy. Using new evidence and cases from across the globe, Environment and Citizenship explores the new vocabulary of ecological citizenship and examines how successful environmental policy-making depends on the responsible actions of citizens and civil society organizations as much as on governments and international treaties. This accessible and thought-provoking book: - provides a comprehensive and timely guide to the debates on environmental and ecological citizenship, expertly combining examples of practice with theory; - examines how environmental movements have become increasingly involved in governance processes at the local, national, regional and intergovernmental levels; - explores the increasing importance of corporations and transnational networks through examples of stakeholding processes and participatory research in environmental decision-making; - calls on researchers, policy-makers and activists to face a new challenge: how to effectively link environmental justice with social justice. Breaking new ground, Smith and Pangsapa address how environmental responsibility operates through politics, ethics, culture and the everyday experiences of ctivists, as well as how awareness of environmental and social injustice only leads to responsible actions and strategic change through civic engagement.
