In the early 1960s Oscar Niemeyer designed a complex in Tripoli that was intended to serve as a large exhibition centre and to be part of the Tripoli International Fair. The location used to be a vast orchard, full of oranges. Now here lies an abandoned complex of 15 structures, including an outdoor theater, a concert hall, an atrium, an arch, a heliport and lodgings. The site is an example of futurist modernist architecture, unfortunately led to decay. The project was never finished due to technical problems, incoherent bud-gets and the Lebanese Civil War in 1975. Photographer Giovanna Silva visited the site and documented what is left, capturing the atmosphere, the fading colours, the leftover stones but nonetheless showing us the grandeur of what was once the centre of Tripoli's architecture.

G1710 is the result of a cooperation between our architecture office, two artists, a critic and a graphic designer.0This book contains four contributions.0The first contribution is a text written by architecture critic Maarten Van Den Driessche about the work of GAFPA of the last ten years. The second contribution contains pictures of our studio made by Aglaia Konrad including fragments of the making process. The third contribution is from Bert Huyghe. As a painter he contributed a text, illustrated by some of his paintings. Imelda Romualdez Marcos is a Filipino politician who was first lady of the Philippines for twenty-one years, during which time she and her husband are widely believed to have illegally amassed a multibillion dollar fortune, the bulk of which still remains unrecovered. Her personal wealth was estimated at $24 billion in 1979, and today it is thought to be at least $30 billion. She married Ferdinand Marcos in 1954 and became first lady in 1965, when he was elected president of the Philippines. During her tenure as first lady, Marcos owned three thousand pairs of shoes. She imported giraffes?just because she could. Her habit of initiating ostentatious architectural projects using public funds came to be described in common parlance as ?Imeldific.? In 1966, Ferdinand Marcos issued Executive Order no. 60, establishing the Cultural Center of the Philippines and appointing its board of directors. The board would elect Imelda Marcos as chair, giving her legal mandate to negotiate and manage funds for the center. The CCP is considered the central symbol of Imelda Marcos?s ?edifice complex.? Its enormous modernist concrete structures were designed by Filipino architect Leandro Locsin. Imelda Marcos declared the center the ?sanctuary of the Filipino soul.? In these pages, Giovanna Silva inspects the heritage of the country, illustrating the robust relationship between architecture and history.

This catalogue documents both the artworks and the almost 300 books on view at an eponymous exhibition at the Mechelen Cultural Centre. Featuring works by Jan Kempenaers, Kasper Andreasen, Aglaia Konrad, Ria Pacquée, Simon Popper, Mitja Tušek, and more, the artistic positions are set against an exhibition design conceived by Kris Kimpe and Koenraad Dedobbeleer, a kind of communal archive that systematically displays a selection of contemporary artists' books. The works closely relate to the codex of the book as a medium for artistic expression, as well as to the different gestures of reproduction that are representative of artists working in various media.

Today discotheques are hardly designed by architects, but rather temporary occupations of spaces which are dedicated to other functions. Through the photographs of Giovanna Silva, a selection of interviews and critical texts, Nightswimming explores this fascinating world from the 1960s until today.




Ravedeath Convention

Started as a visual diary, 'Ravedeath Convention' soon grew into a hybrid of autobiography and fiction. While love, joy and friendship are explored, violence and excess come about too, often captured only as traces and symptoms. A collision of different, occasionally mismatched, cultural symbols stresses the all-embracing blend of subcultres as a fundamental feature of our times. The first pictures taken at age thirteen, this series of black and white images is the edit of a continuous process of photographing, revisiting and reworking over a span of ten years. In the crippled prints the physical presence of body and photograph merge, celebrating human imperfection. The title references Tim Hecker's album 'Ravedeath,1972'.
