Norfolk (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Norfolk When about eight miles of the Bure are traversed 'a change becomes evident in the character of the scenery. Instead of the wearisome sameness of the marshes, you get glimpses of woods and hamlets, and at Stokesby of the first ferry on the river. Stokesby village abuts closely upon the Bure, and is a picturesque little place, though possessing no attractions, save its Ferry Inn, likely to tempt you ashore. It is about three miles from Acle Bridge, where most yachting parties who have started from Yarmouth in the morning are glad to moor for the night. I have referred to Acle in the road itinerary from Norwich to Yarmouth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Norfolk Broads (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Norfolk Broads At the time of the Teutonic overpowering of the Britons of Eastern England, the valleys of East Norfolk were, so far as we can ascertain, still in their estuarine state. On the highlands of Norwich, and near Reedham, where the New Cut now connects the Yare and Waveney, the Saxon kings of East Anglia built residences and held their courts. But the sea tides still ebbed and owed over the oozy ats which stretched many miles inland from the coast the Wild cries of the sea and shore birds were the only voices of this watery wilderness, which seemed destined never to become the dwelling place of man. True, here and there were little oases or islets - holms they were called by the anglo-saxons and on one of them, in what is now the Bure valley, a hermit named Suneman is said to have established himself during the ninth century. At Ellingham, too, between Beccles and Bungay, and on the larger island tracts of Lothingland and the Flegg district, there were doubtless little colonies of Saxons; but although the sandbank on which Yarmouth was afterwards built was slowly forming at the mouth of the great estuary, the sea still claimed the valleys as its own. Gleanings Among the Castles and Convents of Norfolk (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Gleanings Among the Castles and Convents of Norfolk From the year 1845 to the beginning of the present year I held the office of Honorary Secretary to the Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society, the General Meetings of which were held either in Norwich or some town in the county, from which an excursion could be made to one or other of the most interesting of the Antiquities of the district. In the arrangement of these meetings I took a somewhat active part; and with the view of making our gatherings as useful as possible, I gleaned all the information I could, as well from the buildings and remains themselves, as from all the public and private records to which I was permitted access. The result was the accumulation of a large mass of notes and a series of careful surveys, made on the spot and usually aided by excavations. The Norfolk Antiquarian Miscellany, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Norfolk Antiquarian Miscellany, Vol. 2 What could be more natural, therefore, than for the wealthy citizens, who were precluded from building new churches by the fact that there was literally no room for them, than to expend some of their money in decorating and ornamenting the chief church of their town? Unluckily, none of the pre-reformation accounts of the parish are now in existence, l but those still preserved are very full and very interesting.
