We are all fascinated by the mystery of metamorphosis – of the caterpillar that transforms itself into a butterfly. Their bodies have almost nothing in common. The Musee d'Orsay in Paris has organized an unprecedented international exhibition of Cordier's work, highlighting seventy-five sculptures and approximately forty ethnographic photographs. This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1937. Owing to technical constraints it has not been possible to reproduce the map of "North-western Africa in the fifteenth century" which appeared in the first edition of the work.
