An Oceanographic Study of a One Degree Square West of San Francisco, California

Book Description

A one degree square, located in the California Current, was studied oceanographically for both time and spatial changes. Spatially there was some indication of upwelling in the temperature and salinity relationships, but cells of 9.4 C water generally did not give clear indication of sustained upward motion. The time data indicated motion of a 12-hour period, at most depths, over the short 4-day span of observation. However, the 55- and 61-meter levels, interrogated by BTs, showed 40 percent of the perturbations to be out of phase by as much as 2 hours in the first 8 hours of the record. The average phase difference was one-half which suggests heat transport as well as upwelling. From the time record, the variations in the sound speed profiles were determined and from these profiles, the variations in the convergence zone were computed. There was some correlation found between the convergence zone patterns and the pattern of the 65-meter temperature data indicating the possibility of some relationship between this parameter and the variation of the convergence zone.
