This book assesses the challenges confronting the Factory Asia model. It examines how countries that are already part of Factory Asia can move up the value chain, and how economies that currently stand outside the parameters of Factory Asia can find ways to join the global network production system. The book hinges on two tasks: first, how fast can Asia expand its own domestic and regional markets; and second, how fast can Asia upgrade its competitiveness in the manufacturing sector. As analyzed in great detail and depth in this book, small and big obstacles stand in the way of fulfilling these tasks. Without clever economic reasoning, shrewd strategy, and immense political entrepreneurship, the new Factory Asia will remain as an unfinished agenda. This book will serve as catalyst for officials, experts and industries to facilitate a larger public dialogue in and out of Asia, and help generate momentum for the transformation of Asia into a more inclusive and sustainable platform for the future of Factory Asia. Since 2001 the Statistical Offices in Germany offer access to micro level panel data that linked information from various waves of a survey over time. These panel data enormously extended the research potential of data from official statistics by allowing dynamic analyses and control for unobserved heterogeneity via panel econometric methods. A second generation of data sets which became available recently has an even higher research potential. These new data combine information for firms gathered in different surveys (or from external sources) that could not be analyzed jointly before. Merging firm level data from different surveys to construct data sets that cover information on a wider range of variables than the ones collected in any of these surveys, one at a time, is the basic idea of the project AFiD. AFiD is an acronym for the German Amtliche Firmendaten fr Deutschland (official firm data for Germany). The papers in this issue present first results generated with this new type of firm level data and discussions.

The many manifestations of international production sharing have become the organizing theme for practically any discussion on production, trade, investment, development and international economic cooperation more generally. GVCs are at the economic heart of globalization. Policies of governments are central to outcomes, influencing the establishment, configuration and operation of GVCs in numerous ways. Technological possibilities and firm behaviour are also crucial determinants of what happens in the supply chain world. Global value chains (GVCs) have become ubiquitous. The literature that attempts to understand and explain GVCs is vast, multi-disciplinary and no less complex than the phenomenon itself. This volume is an ambitious attempt at a fairly comprehensive review of literature on the subject. --Publisher description.

Outsourcing and offshoring are typically viewed as phenomena allowing competitive advantages for organizations, but some studies have not included the risks, benefits, and challenges of these types of strategies. As such, this book fills this gap by combining several studies from different perspectives. The chapters follow several approaches and applications that researchers explore in different contexts. This book adds to the body of knowledge in outsourcing and offshoring areas and shows how these strategies can stimulate organizations’ development in various countries and regions worldwide.
