Out of the Miry Clay

Book Description

Out of the Miry Clay is a compelling testimony of the everlasting love God has for His children, and the awesome power He has to transform our lives in this touching memoir. It becomes quickly apparent that God was always with Rev. Stigger, from the moment he came close to suicide at age 18, to narrowly escaping capture as a wounded soldier in Vietnam. With His unyielding grace, God took Rev. Stiggerout of the miry clay of drug use, alcoholism, pimping, and broken marriages, then molded him into an apostle of God with the relevant experience needed to save souls and build churches, not with bricks and mortar, but the church that is within-the spirit church. With engaging detail, clear prose and a remarkable sense of humor, Rev. Stigger uses his own fascinating experiences to demonstrate that only God, through the saving grace of Christ, can offer us true, unconditional love. Be prepared to go on an emotional roller coaster ride as Rev. Stigger looks back on his life with hard earned wisdom. Youll definitely find yourself laughing, crying, shaking your head in disbelief, and finally, rejoicing as you read these pages. Enjoy the journey! Brandon A. Out of the Miry Clay

Book Description

My faith journey has been one that took many twists and turns as I struggled to figure out that Jesus needed to be more than just my Savior. Once I realized He had to be Lord and Ruler of my life, my passion and gifts for writing were revealed to me. I began with journaling during my devotional/quiet time. With pen and journal in hand, I would totally open myself up and pour out my heat to God. It was during this time that I began clearly hearing God speak to me and I would write in my journal the lessons He taught me. July of 2008, my husband, Billy, was diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer and many people wanted to be kept up-to-date on his condition. Thus, I began composing update e-mails that I hoped would glorify God and how He was sustaining us through this cancer journey. However, I was determined I would wait on God to give me the words He wanted me to share. So with the keyboard at my fingertips, I began sharing the lessons God was teaching us along this journey. While everyone was very grateful to hear that Billy was being healed, they were very touched by how God was working in our lives. Little did I know that God would use the recipients of these e-mails to encourage me to see my passion for writing as a gift that God was using to call me to expand His territory. Therefore, during the summer of 2010, I finally heeded Gods call to put all my journaling skills and His lessons into composing this devotional book. I pray that God will be glorified as He uses these lessons to help you come to know Him in a deeper more intimate fashion: Broken Shells Chasing Crabs Lessons from The Boys Loving the Unlovable Root Bound Score Another for God Candy Along the Way Flowers From Fertilizer I Want One of Those Covered in Feathers Dead Trees and Deep Roots Foresight Dance With Me The Birds and the Bees Angels and Chemo Gods Orchestra Healing in the Journey Seeing the Wheat Scarcely Abundant Strolling Cracked Pots Give Em More These stories reflect Susans ability to see God in both the big and the little life events. They will inspire you to seek God in both the extraordinary and ordinary events of your life. Jennifer Reese - Academic Coach Dade County High School Trenton, Georgia

The Home Place

Book Description

“A groundbreaking work about race and the American landscape, and a deep meditation on nature…wise and beautiful.”—Helen Macdonald, author of H is for Hawk A Foreword Reviews Best Book of the Year and Nautilus Silver Award Winner In me, there is the red of miry clay, the brown of spring floods, the gold of ripening tobacco. All of these hues are me; I am, in the deepest sense, colored. Dating back to slavery, Edgefield County, South Carolina—a place “easy to pass by on the way somewhere else”—has been home to generations of Lanhams. In The Home Place, readers meet these extraordinary people, including Drew himself, who over the course of the 1970s falls in love with the natural world around him. As his passion takes flight, however, he begins to ask what it means to be “the rare bird, the oddity.” By turns angry, funny, elegiac, and heartbreaking, The Home Place is a meditation on nature and belonging by an ornithologist and professor of ecology, at once a deeply moving memoir and riveting exploration of the contradictions of black identity in the rural South—and in America today. “When you’re done with The Home Place, it won’t be done with you. Its wonders will linger like everything luminous.”—Star Tribune “A lyrical story about the power of the wild…synthesizes his own family history, geography, nature, and race into a compelling argument for conservation and resilience.”—National Geographic
