Concerned with the politics and social justice issues of travel and mobility, it examines the passenger and their experience of the airport, fellow passengers, flying during the COVID-19 pandemic, and response to the issue of air travel sustainability. It explores the diverse experiences of those with a disability or fear of flying. The volume brings the journey to the fore as a complex and meaningful experience, filling a gap in the social science research of tourist behaviour where, traditionally, the focus has been the destination experience. Americans who now endure the inconveniences of crowded airports, packed airplanes, and missed connections might not realize that flying was once an elegant, exhilarating adventure. In this colorful history, Daniel L. Rust traces the evolution of commercial air travel from the first transcontinental expeditions of the 1920s, through the luxurious airline environments of the 1960s, to the more hectic, fatiguing experiences of flying in the post-9/11 era. More choice has not led to more power, easier purchasing of tickets has not led to greater transparency, security queues are getting longer with rules becoming more convoluted, and consumer rights can be overwhelmed by legal complexity. The Committee look to the aviation industry to work towards a system whereby the passenger can buy a clearly priced ticket, drop off baggage and quickly proceed through security to board a plane staffed by well qualified, polite staff.
