God Land

Book Description

“Will resonate with any readers interested in understanding American landscapes where white, evangelical Christianity dominates both politics and culture.” —Publishers Weekly In the wake of the 2016 election, Lyz Lenz watched as her country and her marriage were torn apart by the competing forces of faith and politics. A mother of two, a Christian, and a lifelong resident of middle America, Lenz was bewildered by the pain and loss around her—the empty churches and the broken hearts. What was happening to faith in the heartland? From drugstores in Sydney, Iowa, to skeet shooting in rural Illinois, to the mega churches of Minneapolis, Lenz set out to discover the changing forces of faith and tradition in God’s country. Part journalism, part memoir, God Land is a journey into the heart of a deeply divided America. Lenz visits places of worship across the heartland and speaks to the everyday people who often struggle to keep their churches afloat and to cope in a land of instability. Through a thoughtful interrogation of the effects of faith and religion on our lives, our relationships, and our country, God Land investigates whether our divides can ever be bridged and if America can ever come together. “God Land, Lyz Lenz’s much-anticipated debut book, is a marvel. Not only is it a window into the middle America so many like to stereotype but fail to fully understand in all of its complexity, but it mixes reportage, memoir, and gorgeous prose so seamlessly I wanted to know how she did it.” —Sarah Weinman, author of The Real Lolita

Agrarian Spirit

Book Description

This refreshing work offers a distinctly agrarian reframing of spiritual practices to address today’s most pressing social and ecological concerns. For thousands of years most human beings drew their daily living from, and made sense of their lives in reference to, the land. Growing and finding food, along with the multiple practices of home maintenance and the cultivations of communities, were the abiding concerns that shaped what people understood about and expected from life. In Agrarian Spirit, Norman Wirzba demonstrates how agrarianism is of vital and continuing significance for spiritual life today. Far from being the exclusive concern of a dwindling number of farmers, this book shows how agrarian practices are an important corrective to the political and economic policies that are doing so much harm to our society and habitats. It is an invitation to the personal transformation that equips all people to live peaceably and beautifully with each other and the land. Agrarian Spirit begins with a clear and concise affirmation of creaturely life. Wirzba shows that a human life is inextricably entangled with the lives of fellow animals and plants, and that individual flourishing must always include the flourishing of the habitats that nourish and sustain our life together. The book explores how agrarian sensibilities and responsibilities transform the practices of prayer, perception, mystical union, humility, gratitude, and hope. Wirzba provides an elegant and compelling account of spiritual life that is both attuned to ancient scriptural sources and keyed to addressing the pressing social and ecological concerns of today. Scholars and students of theology, ecotheology, and spirituality, as well as readers interested in agrarian and environmental studies, will gain much from this book.

Seed Planted on Good Ground

Book Description

What happens to seed when planted in fertile soil? In a natural sense when a farmer plants seed in fertile soil, he expects his crop to yield fruit according to the seed planted. The soil was chosen by the farmer as was the seed. When a farmer plants he expects the seed to germinate and grow and eventually produce fruit. Fruit that could be counted for some hundred, some sixty, and some thirty. God who we can say is the farmer has chosen the soil and called it "good ground" meaning as a believer "I was predestined". "He predestined us to be adapted as His sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will" Ephesians 1:5 (KJV). Similar It was the pleasure and will of plant seed, in his chosen soil, expecting to yield fruit. So, Jesus chooses the same analogy for those who are called, choosing to plant his "word" on the fertile soil "me" and every other believer. The book will contain how the word of God which is seed has grown and will continue to grow as it bears more fruit. Even as the farmer expects to yield fruit because of his investment "labor" so does Father God expect for every believer to yield him a return, and the return is fruiting some hundred, and some sixty, and some thirty. The Father in Faith expects His children to produce what He hopes for, meaning He expects us to bear fruit. The evidence not seen by His children, however seen by God the Father. Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen Hebrews 11:1 (KJV). The seed planted in choice soil will produce fruit. This author being "good ground" received the seed, heard the word of God and understood it which bear fruit and brings forth some a hundred, some sixty some thirty Matthew 13: 23 (KJV). The book contains the evidence of seed being planted in good ground. Margaret Majors is a teacher, a wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her ongoing learning is equivalent to the progression of life. Like the life that is in a seed when it is planted in fertile ground and given the necessary sun/son needed for it to grow!
