This book was first published in 1989. The Soviet presence and purposes in Latin America are a matter of great controversy, yet no serious study was hitherto combined with a regional perspective (concentrating on the nature and regional impact of Soviet activity on the ground) and diplomatic analysis, examining the strategic and ideological factors that influence Soviet foreign policy. Nicola Miller's lucid and accessible survey of Soviet-Latin American relations over the past quarter-century demonstrates clearly that existing, heavily 'geo-political' accounts distort the real nature of Soviet activity in the area, closely constrained by local political, social and geographical factors. In a broadly chronological series of case-studies Dr Miller argues that, American counter-influence apart, enormous physical and communicational barriers obstruct Soviet-Latin American relations and that the lack of economic complementarity imposes a natural obstacle to trading growth: even Cuba, often cited as 'proof' of Soviet designs upon the area, is only an apparent exception.

Who will be the last to fall? In this terrifying spin on the old rhyme, a family moves to a seemingly perfect town only to discover that it is anything but normal. Parker doesn’t want to leave her home -- the house she’s lived in her whole life -- but her dad finally, finally got a job and that means they can move somewhere safe, without the fear of break-ins. The town of Coronation is gated community, something that will finally put her mom at ease. As soon as Parker gets there, it puts her at ease too.... at least at first. Everyone is nice. The tennis team immediately accepts her. The teachers are all really cool. Even the boys are easy to talk to...and boys have never been easy to talk to for her. Everything about the community is welcoming, inclusive. But one day during lunch, the loudspeaker crackles and a voice beckons them all to the courtyard. It’s time for the school’s monthly tradition: a mass game of Ring Around the Rosie. But that’s ridiculous. It’s a children’s rhyme. And Parker knows the truth behind the fatalism of the old game is a brutal one—a symbolic ritual around of the Black Plague. Still, the crowd joins hands, chanting and singing the rhyme in unison. The girl left standing is crowned and celebrated as the Rose Duchess. But the next day, she’s gone. Why is no one else concerned that the girl has disappeared? Why is the image of a strangled rose being tagged on the school walls? What is the intoxicated scent that continues to engulf her and cloud her thoughts? As the dark roots of the town begin to rise to the surface, Parker is left to wonder: Where have these sacrifices gone and who are they for? There is only so much time. Because when Parker is the last to fall, the only thing she can do is run...

“Like a favorite recipe, a posy is meant to be savored and shared. Try it yourself, and … welcome a bit of floral enchantment into your life.” —Amy Stewart, author of The Drunken Botanist Inspired by the Victorian-era language of flowers, a posy is a small, round bouquet of flowers, herbs, and plants meant to convey a message, such as dahlias for gratitude, sunflowers for adoration, or thyme for bravery. These floral poems have become Teresa Sabankaya’s signature. Brides want them for their weddings, but a posy is a lovely gift any time of year, and one that readers can easily put together from their garden or with blooms from their local florist. In The Posy Book, Sabankaya shares step-by-step instructions, floral recipes for more than 20 posies, and ideas for seasonal variations. A modern floral dictionary, with 12 original paintings by celebrated illustrator Maryjo Koch, will help readers craft their own posies filled with personal meaning.

Thomas Reed's debut novel, Seeking Hyde, recounts the fascinating history of Robert Louis Stevenson's epic horror story, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It is the tale of a young author defying his father's wishes by becoming a spinner of romantic yarns. It is the tale of his American wife, ten years older than he, driving her husband hard to write one more great novel before his chronic lung disease carries him away. It is the tale of Stevenson reeling under charges from the mother of an old friend that he had fueled her son's fatal alcoholism through his recklessly Bohemian ways. Seeking Hyde sticks closely to the biographical record as Robert Louis Stevenson struggles to write another book to be the successor to Treasure Island. After the infamous two characters, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, take form in a dream, Stevenson writes passionately for three days, convinced that he has crafted his masterpiece. His wife Fanny, a willful and demanding gypsy, offers a scathing critique, obliging him to start over from the beginning. While the revised tale is published to great acclaim, it is ultimately blamed for inspiring a gruesome series of murders in London's East End. From that tragic historical irony, Seeking Hyde moves beyond the actual story of how Jekyll and Hyde came to be to explore the realm of "what if?" Desperate to address his own guilt, Stevenson enters the dark underworld of Victorian London. As he follows a twisted path through this midnight landscape, the author-turned-detective wrestles with the social demons of prostitution, police corruption, and the hypocrisy of powerful men--ultimately coming face-to-face with Jack the Ripper himself.
