The Witty Ditty Poems

Book Description

About the Book The Witty Ditty Poems is designed to teach and reinforce phonics in the English language in a fun way. Its goal is to improve literacy, one person at a time. English is extremely challenging for both native and non-native speakers. Many readers do not know the sounds that different combinations of letters (digraphs, trigraphs, etc.) make and far too many students are leaving high schools unable to read at the expected level. Written by a former teacher, the aim of The Witty Ditty Poems is that everyone, adults, and children, will enjoy the poems, develop a love for reading and poetry, and learn to read and speak English fluently.

Three Old Sundanese Poems

Book Description

Preserved on undated palm-leaf manuscripts, Old Sundanese texts are generally in poor condition and unavailable to a wider audience. There are limited texts in any form of Sundanese, and only limited knowledge of Old Sundanese. In presenting three long Old Sundanese poems, Noorduyn and Teeuw, in a heretofore unequalled English-language study of Old Sundanese literature, bring to the light works of importance for further linguistic, literary and historical research. The three poems, The Sons of Rama and Rawana, The ascension of Sri Ajnyana and The story of Bujangga Manik: A pilgrim's progress were undiscovered before this book. The first two were found in a nineteenth-century manuscript collection of the former Batavian Society and are now in the National Library of Indonesia in Jakarta, while the third was donated to the Bodleian Library in Oxford as early as 1627, though it was not identified as an Old Sundanese poem until the 1950s.

Children Writing Poems

Book Description

This volume demonstrates how the social and instructional worlds that children inhabit influence their poetry writing and performances. Drawing on rich vignettes of students from different racial, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds, it describes and analyzes the work of eight to ten-year-old U.S. students involved in a month-long poetry unit. Children Writing Poems outlines the value of a ‘poetic-functional’ approach to help children convey a poem’s meaning and mood, and expresses the need for educators to scaffold children’s oral readings and performances over time.

Stretched Out on Amethysts / Poems

Book Description

Poems of ecstatic movement, longing, glimpses and glimmers of the divine reality of our existence: Not a moment can be squandered / not a moment can be lost // Grab the rope and swing out / over the abyss // "What rope?" you say / when there are / ropes all around us // dangling at our elbows and lying in / coils at our feet // But invisible to our visible eyes // Our eyes must quit the visible / to see them
