This book provides a scientific and academic contribution to the scholarly exploration of the complex relationship between the East and the West in American literature. The study focuses on four novels (Mornings in Jenin, Falling Man, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, and Riyah Al-Janna (The Wind of Paradise)) to discuss how the literature reflects on Middle Eastern themes in relation to the situations and conditions of the New East. It treats the Orient as a moving body and takes Edward Said’s Orientalism into account, also showing Post-Orientalism or the New East as a literary phenomenon in the 21st century, specializing in politics, militarism, and post-colonial ideology. The book explains and divides the Middle East into two parts: the Arab-Islamic Middle East and the non-Arab-Islamic Middle East. It highlights the similarities and differences between these two parts as depicted in various novels, presenting the East as a land of desolation and destruction due to the political, regional, and religious changes that have shaken it.

This book explores three Indian-English novels, which are Booker Prize nominees: Vikram Seth (1993). A Suitable Boy: Rohinton Mistry (1995). A fine Balance: and the winner of the prize Arundhati Roy (1997). The god of Small Things. The novels selected are aligned thematically by the theme of caste that runs supreme in each one. All other issues like mimicry, marriage and caste-passing, that deal with the Hindu caste movement , are considered to offer exotica. A neology has been created vis-à-vis this work. The created neology neology, 'caste-passing' is used to label the act of moving up or down the the caste ladder that is conducted in the fiction. It is based upon the act and term derived from African-American racial discourses called passing. It means taking up another identity. It has been shown via the chapters that contemporary Indian-English novels whether written within the Indian diaspora overseas or by Indians based in India have adopted Western style Orientalism. The authors make use of the Indian psyche, culture and religious worlds to regurgitate the Western bias against the Other and deliver it to the West for financial gain, which means fame and fortune for the writers. This book shows that Western Orientalsm did not end with post-colonialism in India. Neocolonialism is practiced by the West and is delivered by Indians to them. This work points out that three writers have adhered to a neocolonial Western framework. The Control Data Corporation’s Early Systems

This book is the eighth volume in the Historical Computing Machines series, which aims to document the history of computing machines from the late 1930s up to about 1995. It is focused on the Control Data Corporation’s early systems which reflected the design principles espoused by Seymour Cray. CDC developed and sold early machines as fast processors for use in scientific and engineering organizations. CDC’s early systems were batch-oriented and minimalist in their instruction sets. This volume covers the early CDC systems – from the CDC 160 through the CDC 3800 – in the evolution of computer architectures in the pursuit of fast computers, and describes their system software, their effect on programming language designs, and key applications. It also describes the later CDC 1700 and its successors, the Cyber 17/18 series of minicomputers. As such, this volume strives to bring together a comprehensive, but not exhaustive, view of the capabilities of early CDC computer systems.




Postmodern Orientalism in Don DeLillo's Pre-and-Post 9/11 Fiction


Book Description

Don DeLillo is one of the most prominent figures in contemporary American fiction. This book addresses the intersection between postmodernism and neo-orientalism in his fiction. The writers examine the significance of orientalist discourse, the system of representations about the East, which figures noticeably in DeLillo's fiction, particularly in The Names, Mao II, Cosmopolis, and Falling Man. They argue that this discourse fuses with discourses of terrorism and fundamentalism. Central in this book is the contention that despite the postmodernist claims about the validity of all narratives, DeLillo's postmodern fiction largely excludes the alternative "unwelcome" narratives by disregarding the historical contingencies involved in phenomena such as terrorism.

To judge from many speculative fiction films and books, from Blade Runner to Cloud Atlas, the future will be full of cities that resemble Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, and it will be populated mainly by cold, unfeeling citizens who act like robots. Techno-Orientalism investigates the phenomenon of imagining Asia and Asians in hypo- or hyper-technological terms in literary, cinematic, and new media representations, while critically examining the stereotype of Asians as both technologically advanced and intellectually primitive, in dire need of Western consciousness-raising. The collection’s fourteen original essays trace the discourse of techno-orientalism across a wide array of media, from radio serials to cyberpunk novels, from Sax Rohmer’s Dr. Fu Manchu to Firefly. Applying a variety of theoretical, historical, and interpretive approaches, the contributors consider techno-orientalism a truly global phenomenon. Post-Millennial Palestine: Literature, Memory, Resistance confronts how Palestinians have recently felt obliged to re-think memory and resistance in response to dynamic political and regional changes in the twenty-first century; prolonged spatial and temporal dispossession; and the continued deterioration of the peace process. How does Edward Said's Orientalism speak to us today? What relevance did and does it have politically and intellectually? How and in what modes does Orientalism engage with new, intersecting fields of inquiry? At the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of Orientalism these questions shape the essays collected in the present volume. The "after" of the title does not only guide the contributions in a look on past discussions, but specifically points at future research as well. Orientalism's critical entanglements are thus connected to productive looks; these productive looks make us read differently, but only after we recognize our struggle with the dominant notions that we live by, that divide and unite us.
