Knowledge of the performance of river dykes during flooding is necessary when designing governmental assistance plans aimed to reduce both casualties and material damage. This is especially relevant when floods have increased in their frequency during the last decades, together with the resulting material damage and life costs. Most of previous attempts for analyzing dyke breaching during flooding have neglected to consider the soil mechanics component and the influence of infiltration and saturation changes on the failure mechanisms developed in the river dyke. This research project aimed to fill that gap in knowledge by analyzing, in a comprehensive manner, the effect of transient water conditions, represented by successive flood cycles, on the seepage conditions and subsequent breaching of dykes. Therefore, three key sub-projects were carried out: • the analysis of the results from an overflow field test, • the physical modeling of small-scaled models under an enhanced gravity field, • the numerical modeling of the flow response and the resulting stability of both the air- and water-side slopes. The results from the numerical simulations matched accurately with the results obtained with the centrifuge modeling, including the prediction of local instabilities during the flood cycles for those dykes that did not include a toe filter.

The International Conference on Emerging Trends in Engineering, Science and Technology (ICETEST) was held at the Government Engineering College, Thrissur, Kerala, India, from 18th to 20th January 2018, with the theme, “Society, Energy and Environment”, covering related topics in the areas of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Architecture. Conflict between energy and environment has been of global significance in recent years. Academic research needs to support the industry and society through socially and environmentally sustainable outcomes. ICETEST 2018 was organized with this specific objective. The conference provided a platform for researchers from different domains, to discuss and disseminate their findings. Outstanding speakers, faculties, and scholars from different parts of the world presented their research outcomes in modern technologies using sustainable technologies.

This book brings together the latest research findings from leading economists from India and abroad on ways to revive and sustain higher growth rates in India. Divided into five parts, the first part empirically examines the various factors that affect poverty and shows that growth is crucial to poverty reduction. The second part investigates the factors responsible for sustaining industrial growth including skill formation and innovation. Part III analyses the critical role of monetary policy and shows that it is not very effective in the presence of commodity price shocks and supply constraints. It explains why RBI could not effectively control inflation and why the government must play a crucial supporting role in controlling inflation. Part IV then analyses various supply constraints to growth including agriculture, energy security, social and physical infrastructure and discusses how to deal with them effectively. Part V analyses the labour and financial market policies.

This new edition of the premier air pollution textbook is completely updated and revised to include all components of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. Fundamentals of Air Pollution, Third Edition covers the spectrum of topics pertinent to the study of air pollution: elements, sources, effects, measurement, monitoring, meteorology, and regulatory and engineering control. In addition, the textbook features new chapters on atmospheric emissions from hazardous waste sites, air pathways from hazardous waste sites, and the long-term effects of air pollution on the earth. It also presents updated information on acidic development, long-distance transport, atmospheric chemistry, and mathematical modeling. With extensive references, suggested reading lists, questions, and new figures and tables, this text will serve as an invaluable resource for students and practitioners alike. * This new edition features coverage of: Regulatory requirements of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 New developments in the modelling of air quality Air pollution control Air pollution engineering/atmospheric chemistry
