Qualitative Research in STEM examines the groundbreaking potential of qualitative research methods to address issues of social justice, equity, and sustainability in STEM. Teaching Critical Thinking in STEM

This doctoral-level qualitative research study was conducted to discover what strategies and techniques 10 community college teachers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics believe are useful for teaching critical thinking skills. This dissertation research was also conducted to discover what obstacles the participating teachers face in attempting to teach critical thinking skills in their classrooms. The research was conducted using a basic qualitative research design that employed interviews to uncover and illuminate the instructional experiences of community college teachers currently teaching in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Participants were asked what techniques they find useful or not useful, what obstacles teachers face, and what supports are available for teachers to teach critical thinking. Interview transcripts were analyzed using a constant comparative method to determine common themes. Findings of the study included descriptions of modeling critical thinking skills, allowing students to practice using the skills, and assessing the critical thinking skills using a skills-based assessment. The described useful practices also included the requirement of analysis throughout, including analysis of data, analysis of process, and analysis of thinking. The most significant obstacles for teachers in community college STEM courses were found to be support and pedagogical education. Further research is needed to discover what teachers at other educational levels are doing to teach critical thinking, and to discover how to support and provide professional development for community college STEM teachers.

Conducting Qualitative Research in the COVID-19 Era

In the early days of 2020, a COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the global social framework. The pandemic had a negative impact on academia, particularly for women and women of color in STEM disciplines. The current study is a qualitative exploration of identified issues of inequity and the effect the pandemic had on STEM women and women of color as they transitioned from working on university and college campuses to working remotely from home. The pandemic not only impacted the academic community but also had direct ramifications for qualitative researchers attempting to conduct research projects in the pandemic environment. This case study delves into the complexity of conducting qualitative research in a pandemic where the participants and the methods are heavily compromised by the necessary safety measures. This case study looks at the ideal state of conducting qualitative research on gender inequity for STEM women teaching faculty and researchers during the pandemic and contrasts that ideal state with the real state that threatened to derail the research process. Institutional Review Board safety measures are explained, and the necessary redesign of the project is detailed. Furthermore, data collection problems and solutions are offered. What is important to remember is that the pandemic environment posed problems for all researchers, and this environment was new to everyone. What was learned within the pandemic environment must be built upon for the advancement of research in a postpandemic world and in preparation should a similar event occur in the future.

Understanding Girls

Understanding Girls: Quantitative and Qualitative Research is a retrospective of the author’s research that led to receiving the 2013 Distinguished Contributions Award to Science Education through Research. This book includes selected articles that document changes in her research approaches and theoretical frameworks. The articles represent the evolution of her thinking about the issue of girls in science as well as her impact on science education. The author’s work is placed in the context of science education research at the time of publication, research in education and psychology, and the culture of the times. She pulls back the curtain that often makes the messy work of research seem straightforward and linear to reveal why she did the research and the methodological decisions she faced. She describes the serendipitous nature of some of the work as well as her frustrations in trying to understand data, and struggles to insure that she accurately and respectfully presented the voices of girls and their teachers. The book also includes some of the earliest research in engineering education preceding the focus on engineering practices found in the Next Generation Science and Engineering Standards.
