Este volumen reúne una serie de ensayos cuyo origen fue un coloquio doble - Reescrituras I y II - organizado en Leiden en mayo 2001 por el Departamento de Lenguas y Culturas de América Latina, la Cátedra de Estudios Brasileños y la Netherlands Graduate School for Literary Studies (OSL), con el apoyo de la Universidad de Aarhus y del University College London. En Imagen y Memoria (Reescrituras I) las aproximaciones, cada una a su modo, giran en torno a un aspecto del tema propuesto: desde el tratamiento de varios niveles de intertextualidad hasta la cuestión compleja de la presencia simultánea de múltiples memorias en la literatura. Muchos trabajos problematizan el rescate de las voces del pasado, oscurecidas y marginalizadas, que dialogan con el presente o se mezclan con él creando situaciones anacrónicas que al fin y al cabo terminan por eliminar las barreras entre lo erudito y lo popular, lo moderno y lo tradicional, lo propio y lo ajeno. En Jorge Luis Borges y la cultura popular (Reescrituras II) el hilo conductor es la propuesta inicial del coloquio: la escritura de Jorge Luis Borges como mito, como estereotipo de las Reescrituras de lo popular. La hipótesis fue la del estudiante de "El acercamiento a Almotásim" "En algún punto de la tierra hay un hombre de quien procede esa claridad, en algún punto de la tierra está el hombre que es igual a esa claridad". El volumen se cierra con un ensayo en el cual la autora asume en primera persona los desgarramientos y las reescrituras de la modernidad.




Re-mapping World Literature


Book Description

How can we talk about World Literature if we do not actually examine the world as a whole? Research on World Literature commonly focuses on the dynamics of a western center and a southern periphery, ignoring the fact that numerous literary relationships exist beyond these established constellations of thinking and reading within the Global South. Re-Mapping World Literature suggests a different approach that aims to investigate new navigational tools that extend beyond the known poles and meridians of current literary maps. Using the example of Latin American literatures, this study provides innovative insights into the literary modeling of shared historical experiences, epistemological crosscurrents, and book market processes within the Global South which thus far have received scant attention. ReFiguring Global Challenges

African Literatures as World Literature

The enormous success of writers such as Teju Cole and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie demonstrates that African literatures are now an international phenomenon. But the apparent global legibility of a small number of (mostly Anglophone) writers in the diaspora raises the question of how literary producers from the continent, both past and present, have situated their work in relation to the world and the kinds of material networks to which this corresponds. This collection shows how literatures from across the African continent engage with conceptualizations of 'the world' in relation to local social and political issues. Focusing on a wide variety of geographic, historical and linguistic contexts, the essays in this volume seek answers to the following questions: What are the topographies of 'the world' in different literary texts and traditions? What are that world's limits, boundaries and possibilities? How do literary modes and forms such as realism, narrative poetry or the political essay affect the presentation of worldliness? The century from 1750 to 1850 was a period of dramatic transformations in world history, fostering several types of revolutionary change beyond the political landscape. Independence movements in Europe, the Americas, and other parts of the world were catalysts for radical economic, social, and cultural reform. Graphic Novels and Comics as World Literature


Book Description

Graphic narratives are one of the world's great art forms, but graphic novels and comics from Europe and the United States dominate scholarly conversations about them. Building upon the little extant scholarship on graphic narratives from the Global South, this collection moves beyond a narrow Western approach to this quickly expanding field. By focusing on texts from the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Asia, these essays expand the study of graphic narratives to a global scale. Graphic Novels and Comics as World Literature is also interested in how these texts engage with, fit in with, or complicate notions of World Literature. The larger theoretical framework of World Literature is joined with the postcolonial, decolonial, Global South, and similar approaches that argue explicitly or implicitly for the viability of non-Western graphic narratives on their own terms. Ultimately, this collection explores the ways that the unique formal qualities of graphic narratives from the Global South intersect with issues facing the study of international literatures, such as translation, commodification, circulation, Orientalism, and many others.
