Recollections of Seventy-Two Years (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Recollections of Seventy-Two Years I am very desirous moreover of seeing the promotion of a fuller commercial understanding between Great Britain and Italy, such as that indefatigable friend of Italy, Commenda tore Richard Bagot, has been continually urging in his addresses at our greatest commercial centres, under the auspices of the British Italian League. It has been, I believe truly, said that England's weake'st spot is her neglect of foreign languages. It does 'not speak well for our public-school training, when Englishmen in prominent positions are unable to make themselves under stood in French, the language adopted by all nations in their diplomatic intercourse. And I trust that the Italian lan guage will now come to be regarded as a no less essential feature in our higher education. Recollections of an Old Man

Book Description

Excerpt from Recollections of an Old Man: Seventy Years in Dixie 1827-1897 Said in the introduction to these Recollections, and Dr. Burrow, who was editor of The Midland Methodist while they were pass ing th columns, said, it is not necessary to explain further, the why, and the how, of this little book. It will be seen also that the first chapter is largely prefatory. Only this I will say, that but for the repeated re quests of Dr. Burrow and other friends, for some reminiscences, they would never have been begun, and but for encouragement, after the first few chapters had appeared, they would never have been continued. Their appearance in this book form, is in compliance with a request of the Holston Conference in annual session. So I say Brethren, I am not so much publishing a book as that I am publishing my obedience to your wish. Dr. Burrow and the Conference are responsible for the gathering up and preserving of this basket of fragments. Recollections of Seventy Years and Historical Gleanings of Allegheny, Pennsylvania (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Recollections of Seventy Years and Historical Gleanings of Allegheny, Pennsylvania Some years previous to his death, Judge Parke commenced writing the history of Pittsburg and Allegheny; learning that his friend, the late Dr. Jonas R. McClintock, was engaged on a similar work for the first-named city, he generously desisted from that part of his self-imposed task, and confined his labors to a preparation of the early history of Allegheny. Except a couple of trips to California, his entire life was lived in these cities; and it extended almost from the commencement of settlement here, for three-quarters of a century. The many papers he read before the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania, evinced his ability to perform this work; and it is greatly regretted that he was not permitted to complete it. The papers here offered to the public were found among his manuscripts; and his earnest and frequently repeated desire to give the people of this city and vicinity a history of their city, has induced his family to undertake the publication. It is the request of his widow, that they be printed precisely as he left them; and with the exception of a few slight alterations, absolutely necessary, her request has been complied with.
