Book Description

From an international, research-led perspective, this book explores how languages are foregrounded in education in different countries and educational sectors, and among different groups of people in contexts of migration. It is concerned with the movement of people and their languages as they migrate across borders, and as languages—and their speakers—are under threat, pressure and pain, even to the point of being silenced. The contributors explore the multilingual possibilities and opportunities that these situations present. For example: where children’s education is neglected because of displacement or exclusion; or in classrooms where teachers and educational leaders seek to meet the needs of all learners, including those who are new citizens, refugees, or asylum seekers. Together, the findings and conclusions emerging from these studies open up a timely space for interdisciplinary, inter-practitioner, and comparative researcher dialogue concerning languages and intercultural education in times of migration. Originating from an Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project "Researching multilingually at the borders of language, the body, law and the state", this book provides readers with a natural impetus for exploring how languages and their speakers create new imaginaries and new possibilities in educational contexts and communities, as people engage with one another in and through these languages. This book was originally published as a special issue of Language and Intercultural Communication.

Durante tales workshop, con una duración de cuatro semanas, los alumnos y docentes del Master afrontan, en terreno, en colaboración con el Centro de Desarrollo Local e Interculturalidad (CEDEL) de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (socio propuslor de la experiencia), las administraciones locales, las instituciones y las comunidades locales, prácticas sobre problemáticas concretas.El presente libro ilustra la 3ra experiencia aplicada de la 4ta edición del curso (a.a. 2011-2012) centrada en la creación de redes de tres Comunas (Villarrica, Pucón y Curarrehue) situadas en la Cuenca del Lago Villarrica en la Región de la Araucanía, Chile, donde se encuentran fuertes elementos sociales, económicos y ambientales, pero que carece de políticas integradas de desarrollo capaces de incluir activamente a las comunidades locales y direccionar al territorio hacia un modelo de desarrollo sostenible. El trabajo desarrollado representa la primera etapa de un proyecto estimulación territorial de tres años.

Sharing Knowledge, Transforming Societies


Book Description

In June 2016, the Norwegian Programme for Capacity Development in Higher Education and Research for Development (Norhed) hosted a conference on the theme of knowledge for development in an attempt to shift the focus of the programme towards its academic content. This book follows up on that event. The conference highlighted the usefulness of presenting the value of Norheds different projects to the world, showing how they improve knowledge and expand access to it through co-operation. A wish for more meta-knowledge was also expressed and this gives rise to the following questions: Is this way of co-operating contributing to the growth of independent post-colonial knowledge production in the South, based on analyses of local data and experiences in ways that are relevant to our shared future? Does the growth of academic independence, as well as greater equality, and the ability to develop theories different to those imposed by the better-off parts of the world, give rise to deeper understandings and better explanations? Does it, at least, spread the ability to translate existing methodologies in ways that add meaning to observations of local context and data, and thus enhance the relevance and influence of the academic profession locally and internationally? This book, in its varied contributions, does not provide definite answers to these questions but it does show that Norhed is a step in the right direction. Norhed is an attempt to fund collaboration within and between higher education institutions. We know that both the uniqueness of this programme, and ideas of how to better utilise the learning and experience emerging from it, call for more elaboration and broader dissemination before we can offer further guidance on how to do things better. This book is a first attempt.




Racism and Discourse in Latin America

Racism and Discourse in Latin America investigates how public discourse is involved in the daily reproduction of racism in Latin America. The essays examine political discourse, mass media discourse, textbooks and other forms of text, and talk by the white symbolic elites, looking at the ways these discourses express and confirm prejudices against indigenous people and against people from African descent.
